To the surprise of pretty much nobody, Ubisoft's Watch Dogs has claimed the top spot in the UK multiformat chart — but Mario Kart 8 has sped into second place, causing a massive spike in Wii U console sales.

According to Chart Track, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Watch Dogs claimed the top two spots, with Mario Kart 8 effectively coming in second and pulling ahead of the 360 and PS3 editions of Ubisoft's open-world hacking adventure — the Wii U version of which has been delayed.

Eurogamer is reporting that Wii U hardware sales have grown a staggering 666 percent during the Mario Kart 8's launch week (something that will no doubt please Iron Maiden Fans), with 82 percent of those sales being the Mario Kart 8 hardware bundle.

Nintendo’s flagship racing series has finally made its way onto the Wii U, and it’s made a considerable splash in terms of hardware sales. According to UK chart sales tracker UKIE, Mario Kart 8 has been a smash hit for the home console and boosted sales by a massive 666% percent.

While the popular Kart title didn’t manage to beat Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs this week, coming in third place instead, the game has made waves of its own by becoming the best-selling Wii U title since the console’s launch in November 2012, followed by the accolade as the second best-selling of the series so far. Figures concerning hardware rose by a seriously meaty percentage with 82 per cent of total sales coming from the Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle.

Oh mother of Hylia, that percentage... It seems the Wii U will be back into the race with a demonic fury, to destroy the naysayers. If the game sold 400k in such a weak market as Japan, I wouldn't be surprised to see a million units sold worldwide on its "first week".

It should be, nothing can stop the power of Mario Kart. The game may be quite close to MK7 actually, even though the game came out during the Holidays and the 3DS had a bigger install base. This using VGChartz numbers for MK7,  but anyway:

 

1. Japan: MK8: estimated of 400k -

 

MK7: 423k

 

2. UK: MK8: Second biggest launch, number unknown -

 

MK7: 54k

 

Seeing how the most obvious is that MK8 is only behind MKWii, it should be over  54k

 

3. France:

 

MK8: Unknown, though the game has stayed 1 in Amazon and the bundle is fighting against the PS4 at the moment, a market study revealed that around 10 million gamers were pottentially interested in the game over there. 

 

MK7: 53k

 

4. Germany

 

MK8: Completely unknown

 

MK7: 51k

 

5. All Europe:

 

MK8: Unknown

MK7: 205k

 

6. NAMK8: Unknown, but Mario Kart 8 has maintained itself on 1 in Amazon, and the bundle is on the Top 3 in Gamestop

 

MK7: A whooping 643k

 

Mario Kart 7 couldn't get to the million units sold on the first week, but Mario Kart 8 did have various things that MK7 didn't, from a console bundle, to the Europe Limited Editions, and the Steelbook version in Germany. It shouldn't be too hard to break the Million units sold, specially when digital sales are added.

I always had faith in the Wii U. Once certain games expanded their game library I knew it would be ok .

What I really love about this is the fact that 82% of the total sales came from the MK8 Wii U bundle.

If it was able to do this great numbers in 3 days alone, and it got a gigantic boost in UK, Nintendo's smallest market, imagine how big that hardware boost will be worldwide!

Oh man if Mario Kart 8 alone is helping to boost sales of the Wii U just imagine how much Wii U units will be sold when Zelda U and Smash bros for Wii U comes out. Especially during the holiday season since that's likely how close Smash bros for Wii U will come out.

As we already know, 1.2 million copies have been sold worldwide. I just thought this nice shiny picture looked nice.
