Sequelitis: A Link to the Past vs. Ocarina of Time

Posted

In case you've never heard of Sequelitis, it's a series where Arin Hanson (Egoraptor) gives his opinion on either a sequel as noted by the title, or the game series as a whole and where its going. As the title says, A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are the big talk, but the major idea is how a formula has been formed and the idea originally created with The Legend of Zelda for NES has been completely cut off from us.

I love the Zelda franchise. It's my most favorite franchise in the industry, but I'm in huge agreement with the ideas and opinions brought to attention in this Sequelitis. My least favorite thing about Zelda is its obnoxiously close minded fanbase. So if you can't get through the video, I wouldn't recommend commenting on it at all. How can you give an opinion of your own, especially if it opposes the one in this video, if you can't even give someone else the chance to justify their own opinion?

Bout damn tiiiiiiime

Cant wait to watch this when I get home

Well, it's about diddly-damn-darn-time.

I think he made some pretty good points, too. The new Zelda games have really been missing the adventurous aspect of the 2D entries. I love the new ones (Wind Waker's my favorite game in the series), but I really hope that they make Zelda U have more of an adventurous, exploration-based game style than the style we've had for a while. Also... Please, no Navi/Tatl/Fi/Whatever else this time. I can tell when I'm low on hearts myself, thank you very much.

I saw this the day it came out, but f*ck it why not watch it again.

I've been playing a Link Between World recently and I love it. Don't know whether to try Ocarina of Time after watching this video haha..

the reson i like zelda is becouse of the immersion and the feeling that YOUR the one experiencing the story. the more text/diologe there is the bigger the adventure. so i have to disagree with what he said about the diologe part. but almost everything else he's right about. ever scince the transition to 3D, the game has become less about exploring. exploring is fun in a vast and large world like zelda's this makes me glad that they are going back to the conventions of old with the new zelda wii u. that said, i still enjoy almost all zelda games tho. i couldent agree more that sometimes the puzzle are just like "find a switch. find the next switch." *door opens* there are definetly a lot of those in 3D zelda. but there are still some great puzzles!

remember when in wind waker there was a rope bridge in this one dungeon and you had to get to the lower level directly below it? what better way to do that than taking advantage of the fact that your standing on a ROPE bridge and cut the ropes so that the bridge collapses and you fall directly bellow?

there are many puzzles in zelda like that when you have to think outside the box! but even with that example, there still are a lot of puzzles like said switch scenario mentioned earlier. but when it comes down to it, i play zelda for the adventure and immersion. the more diologe, the more expansive the journey becomes. this is one of the many reasons i love jrpgs so much! complicated stories! i truly believe that the story is what defines an rpg. that said, you cant enjoy the story if crappy gameplay is getting in your way so the game needs to also have good gameplay. i consider zelda more of an adventure gonre than a puzzle gonre. ill be the first to admit that there are games that have tackled the puzzle gonre better. (the first one that comes to mind is PORTAL!) i play zelda mostly for the adventure. i really like when it has heavy diologe! i wont be ignorant and say that zelda has the best gameplay in video game history. thats what different gonres are for. but as an experience, to experience an adventure that YOUR in and making a legitamate input and effort to succed (even if the story is pre decided) your still the one experiencing it. zelda is by no means my favorite series. it comes close but not quite there yet. and i DEFINETLY wont deny that some of the fanbase is ignorant as f*** but i do disagree with some (not all) statements made by egoraptor. and he is one of my favorite content creators. i hope you guys dont think im fanboying becouse i dont think i am. egoraptor did adress some valid points that needed to be adressed and i agnolegde and agree with a lot of those statements. i still enjoy the games he critisized tho. why? adventure and immersion with puzzle solving (when its not crappy) on the side. if you somehow managed to read through this extremly long excuse for a casual forum post than i solute you. ;) (there isnt a solute emoticon)

His issue with the dialogue was more based on how slowly it slows, how much of it is repeat, etc. It's not necessarily the amount of dialogue.

well, either way, i didnt find it an issue. the puzzle thing i agree with tho.

He made some good points in this video like the bosses in ALTTP,I agree that they where some of the best in the serie.I just replayed the original Zelda very recently and its true that the other games in the serie doesn't feel as ''open'' as the original including ALTTP,but I don't think the original game deserves all that praise he gave it,the game have pretty cheep design in some part where you have to bomb a random wall to progress further in the game or walk through walls in dungeons,if a game let you explore a world like that without holding your hand,it should at least give you clues like cracked wall, playing the original Zelda without a guide is impossible and in that sense the other Zelda games have much better design, the reason why ALTTP and the other games hold your hand a bit more its to avoid the cheep design of the original, but I agree that sometimes it feels like the other Zelda hold your hand a bit too much.

Even if you're guided though the game by the story, Zelda games still have a lot of exploration, the game tells you that you need the 3 stones in Oot and where to find them, but they don't tell you HOW to get them, that's up to the player and because you need to talk to people to progress doesn't make the game less enjoyable.

It seemed to me that a lot of its complains of Oot was because it wasn't a ALTTP clone, like all the waiting he mention, its not a bad think, its just different and its not like the loadings of Sonic 06,when you're waiting for an enemy you're on your guard because the enemies can attack at any moments and a lot of time there are multiple enemmies so you feel like you're really in the game. The combat definitely doesn't feel like the older games, but its not a bad thing its just different and dealing with enemies in 3D like the bats is definitely not as bad as he made it out to be,there are so many strategies to easily kill them, like using the shield to stun them or the deku nuts. I can't believe he really complained about the door closing and the treasure cheast animations, its like complaining about the screen transitions for each area of the original game, its such a minor detail,I don't see how it take away from the experience.

Exploring dungeons doesn't feel like ALTTP,but again different doesn't mean its bad, like using the first person view to find that switch,I actually like that kind of puzzle and back then 3D was a new thing so its a clever way to hide a switch in my opinion and I find it weird when he said that it was boring to stand to look around in a room,Zelda is not Sonic, its not a racing game, its an adventure game where you explore places,so it makes sense to stand around and think once in a while and personally I think that the 2D Zelda lack that aspect which ruins the immersion a bit.

Anyway,at the end of the day its his opinion I guess and if he doesn't like the game that's fine, there are a lot of popular game that a lot a people like that I don't like COD or FFXIII, hell played Chrono Trigger, one of the most beloved game ever and I didn't like it all that much(I don't hate it,but its definitely not a game I'll replay anytime soon). I'll always consider Oot as my second favorite game of all time, its such a great game and I agree that Oot is not the PERFECT transition of Zelda in 3D,its still amazing for what it is.

For the first part here, it wasn't about the waiting for the idea of waiting. It was the fact that it gave the illusion of difficulty while relatively remaining easy as possible. Many people mixed that up. I can understand him complaining about the other stuff as well. It may be a minor thing, but it can really bug people when they're in a game made for adventuring and yet they've gotta wait for every little thing to happen. It's why so many of these problems were fixed in later titles. It's why The Wind Waker HD fixed many of the problems held in the original rendition. They built newer titles for faster pacing and better combat, dropping frames required to do certain things so there wasn't as much waiting required. No more multiple encores with the Wind Waker, Swift Sail, Grappling hook for sunken treasure, better inventory, giving you the ability to swap out items while still playing the game. All of it built to cut down on all the waiting.
