This has been a big issue for me.

By looks of it, each Final Fantasy games happens either on a different World, year or dimension from one another. The only connection between these games are when a spin-off happens.

Is there really any connection between the games? I mean, really. Can a Final Fantasy game be a story of its own or is it a continuation of previous games like Kingdom Hearts does?

I don't think they do?

I honestly don't know.

Wait, what?

Wait, what?

The video games in the Compilation of FINAL FANTASY VII all take place on the same timeline and in the same universe.

FF1-IV pretty definitively take place on the same planet. (In fact, I think that was made officially canon by Square) For example, Kain makes an appearance in FFII as the son of Richard, the Dragoon you can play as. FFIV directly references that.

V takes place on, at least, it's own planet.

VI is alone.

VII, X and XII possibly take place in the same universe. VII and X have a fair amount of evidence to support it (if you deem X-2 canon, which it is) but I've also heard that XII also takes place in the same universe. Haven't heard much more about that last one, though, so I'm a little iffy on it.

VIII is alone.

IX shares a lot with the first four FF's, but it's alone, as well.

And XIII and XV share the same mythos, but I don't think they're intended to be in the same universe.

Well, each Final Fantasy game is separate from the other, and the only connection you see commonly in the games is that in almost every entry there is a character named Cid. In all the FF games I've played so far, I've seen Cids in FF III, IV, VII and XIII. Cid is a recurrent character in the series that appears in a different incarnation in each installment. ^_^

The video games in the Compilation of FINAL FANTASY VII all take place on the same timeline and in the same universe.

To be more precise, I believe the order is Crisis Core, FFVII, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus. There is also Before Crisis, but, if I'm correct, is a Japanese mobile only game. You can count it, but you probably won't be able to play it.

This has been a big issue for me.

Aside from few things like the compilation of FFVII,the FFXIII trilogy,X & X-2,FF4 and The After Years and references and nods to other games in the series.......no they don't

I had the same thoughts before but ultimately there are a couple plotholes that will generate as soon as you started linking the games together

I was hoping that they all took place in the same universe because they have so many things that are similar with each other. But only a few of them take place in the same universe.

Some numbers have prequels and sequels and some spin-offs are set in the same world as a numbered title. It's pretty obvious which ones. But you aren't required to play another title in order to play another.

They all are connected by two God-like beings Cosmos and Chaos, as evidenced in Dissidea Final Fantasy. Beyond that, the only connection between seperate numerical titles that can be made are VII and X, as after the events of the X series, people discover and settle down on a planet and establish SHINRA, meaning they're on the same planet as VII, albeit thousands of years earlier before the events of Crisis Core.

XII I believe is part of the Ivalice Alliance so it's not connected to VIII or X otherwise you're entirely correct.

They all share common elements but for the most part numbered titles are in self contained universe which I think proves Moogles are extra dimensional beings like Gilgamesh, Ultros and Typhon. Chocobo's too. Dissidia says all these universes are parallel and it's possible that KH could be in one of the parallel dimensions.

VII and X exist on the same universe, that was confirmed in an ultimania. Basically Shinra from FFX-2 inhabits Gaia(the FFVII planet) and starts the shinra company.

Yep.

Yep.

i just read some stuff about FF X and FF VII. Apparently. Bevelle Underground is supposed to represent Midgar which is interesting!

Probably Nojima's idea.

...that was an in-joke by the GBA developers. The original NES (and PS1 remake of) FF2 has no such reference to the best of my knowledge, and the timeline and world detail of FF4 as given by official materials makes the idea of 2 and 4 being set in the same world literally impossible.

Not really. Not impossible, anyway. (I think the PSP version kept Kain's name in, as well) Plus, the DS version of IV directly names Richard as Kain's father. Not to mention the other similarities, such as the Super bosses in the PSP remake of FFI being the Four Fiends from FFIV. You could argue that that's 'just an easter egg' as it would literally be impossible for those four Fiends to die in FFI when they show up in IV, but that first one is basically 100% canon. At least, if you follow the current versions of the games. You're correct in that it was originally just an in-joke, but I think they've ran with it and made it 'official', if you believe the DS version of FFIV.

There's holes here and there, but I think it's more if you really want them to connect. There's enough evidence to support it, but still some holes that disagree.

Was? It's still only an in-joke/easter egg/whatever. You're really grasping at straws here. And FF4 Kain's father died years before the game started, not during it, as I understand FF2.

For the GBA version, yes. Again, I'm referencing FFIV DS that directly named Richard as his father. I never said he was alive during the game, just that the game references that character, in response to the Kain easter egg in FFII. You could argue that it's an homage, not a 'real' link, but I think that's a matter of personal opinion. It's there if you, me, or anyone else wants them to link them together. On top of several other connections that may vary in how far it stretches believability.

That's what I originally thought, too, but I've heard they may be connected. Nothing substantial, though, so you're most likely right.

I really don't know what you're trying to argue here... those back-and-forth references between the games were developer's jokes, nothing more (and I'm fully aware of the DS version's script). People share names all the time. There is nothing in-universe that indicates an actual connection between the two games.
