Gameplay vs Story: Which Matters Most to You?

Posted

When it comes to a game, everyone has different views on what's most important. What do you think is most important: The gameplay, or the storyline?

I think it's the gameplay, definitely. The thing that sets a game apart from a movie is how it lets you interact with the world around the character. I love seeing what games can do gameplay-wise. I'm willing to play most games with crappy stories or games lacking in plot as long as the gameplay is good. Stories are just bonuses to me.

In most games, gameplay. but in rpgs and games like metal gear story is very important.

it has to be a good balance of both . you can't have a great game like say KH without good story or gameplay

I believe balance of both, but if I had to pick I'd say story. In a game, story is what captivates me most, and is why I want to go into the video game industry. However one cannot simply have a shitty game play. (Look at Sonic '06 for Pete's sake)

I can't say one does. If something has an amazing story but horrible gameplay it's very hard to play and the same vice visa.

Story for me. If I don't feel invested in a game's story I can't find any reason why I should play anymore. Although admittedly as a child I skipped all cutscenes that I could.

Both aspects are important for making the game what it is.

Good gameplay adds greatly to a games value to me, but in the end I will put up with just about anything if it has a good story going on.

Depends on the genre

In Platformers I really won't care as long as the gameplay is great and fun cuz I won't question the ethics of Mario and Bowser beating the shit outta each other

Same goes with fighting games too

But in RPGs both equally matters cuz a great story has to be coupled with a fun and addicting gameplay

The story is more important in my opinion. When I usually get a video game I don't really care about the gameplay I usually focus on the story especially if it is a new game that I am playing. If the game just focus on gameplay and their was no story to it I wouldn't like it. That's why I like video games with a timeline and a story.

I focus on story more because I can't stand playing a game if it has a horrible story, and sadly many famous games out there are just famous because of online gameplay and bad stories.

If I can't stand the game play, then I won't play the game, even if it has a good/interesting story. One example for me is Final Fantasy XII. I liked the characters and the story, but I found its battle system to be boring, and thus never completed it.

That isn't to say story isn't important (at least in RPGs). The story doesn't have to be "OMG super original and unique and deep" (though those things are all helpful, of course), it just has to be able to provide entertainment and drive me to go forward.

I would say gameplay, but only because I think a game can do better with a bad story than bad gameplay. I try to stick to games that are at least average in both areas
