Doctor Who is a British sci-fi television program that revolves around the adventures through time and space of an alien called the Doctor in his machine disguised as a blue police telephone box called the TARDIS (which stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space). Then along the way he also picks up companions (only the best though) to travel with him.

Though the Doctor looks human he is actually a Time Lord from the ancient planet Gallifrey (so he doesn't look human, you look Time Lord --they came first). The Time Lords are, obviously, lords of time. They have the technology to travel through all of time and space and can seemingly live on forever. They have superb mental powers, such as having telepathy and possibly even clairvoyant. They also have a little trick to cheat death called regeneration.

Regeneration is when a Time Lord completely reboots their body when they're dying to gain a new face and personality while maintaining their memories. However if a Time Lord is killed before their regeneration is complete, they are as good as dead. Within a certain time limit (I believe it's 10 hours but I'm not too sure I'll have to recheck) after regeneration Time Lords are able to heal themselves of injuries (even regrow severed limbs). As cool of a parlor trick regeneration may be, a Time Lord can only regenerate 12 times before they die.

So far, the Doctor is on his 11th regeneration, having regenerated 10 times. The current Doctor is played by Matt Smith, and his three companions, Amy, Rory, and River, are played by Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Alex Kingston respectively.

Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi show, having over 32 seasons and overall over 700 (almost 800 last I calculated) episodes and a movie that aired in 1996. The show originally aired in 1963 which ran until 1989. The show was then rebooted in 2005 and continues to run today. It is also the most successful sci-fi series of all time.

This thread is to discuss Doctor Who; what you love about it, your favorite Doctor, favorite companion, songs you like, moments you like, and possibly even spoilers as the 7th season approaches within the next few weeks.

I will try my best to update this thread with news as it comes out. If you see something that I don't then feel free to post it as well!

So yeah go free my little Whovians!

What we know about series 7 so far.

I'm glad they got McGann back to play the 8th Doctor for the mini episode. It is good to have some closure with him. I just hope we see Hurt's Doctor regenerate into Eccleston.

I wonder what people would react if a future companion of the 12th Doctor turn out to be Rose's daughter?

Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor) is confirmed to return in the 50th Anniversary. I'm excited! 4 Days left NA, 3 Days left UK!

The Huffington Post reports that Tom Baker will be making an appearance in the special.

They quote the man himself as saying: “I am in the special. I’m not supposed to tell you that, but I tell you that very willingly and specifically; the BBC told me not to tell anybody but I’m telling you straightaway.”

Baker calls the circumstances of his appearance “extraordinary.”

“It worked out very well, I think, judging by the reactions of the technicians,” he adds.

A BBC representative told the site: “As with William Hartnell’s recent appearance in the last season finale, anything is possible in Doctor Who. But nothing is certain.”

If you have to suffer through commercials during Doctor Who, I feel sorry for you.

I've never watched an episode of Doctor Who with commercials.  Australian TV FTW!

I'm excited for the 3D theater option.

Everything is better when it's the size of your house.

I'll pick it up on Blu-ray 3D when it comes out.

12 hours until the 798th episode of Doctor Who.

Today's the day! I'm so excited! I'm planning to pick up the Blu-Ray as well, probably for Christmas.

That was firetrucking amazing. All the doctors together in the end. Even the 13th.

Oh oh, I didn't expect to see that kind of special!

The feels are soooooo strong in this one!!!!!

Also for those who haven't seen it : First preview of the Christmas Special

That moment when you realize you won't ever see the greatest Doctor of all time again. :(

I know there might not be a female Doctor Who in the near future but anyone think Emma Watson would make a good Doctor?

That was one of the best episodes ever.

Yuck. No.

I'd think she'd make a good Guest star.

As a one-time Companion or a Alternate Doctor?

As a one-time Companion or a Alternate Doctor?

As a Craig-type companion. Appears once, might come back again in another episode or two later on.
