Back again for a "Game Tweaks" thread, where I come up with tweaks that can be made to the Kingdom Hearts gameplay formula so that it can be better in certain areas. This subject I've chosen specifically because it is related to my last thread in a way, so Its sort of a nice transition.

 

In my last thread, I suggested that party member management be improved; I talked about the party system, the amount of members; and guest members. Now I'm going to talk about something entirely: how all these members act.

 

Now unfortunately, it is notorious in the Kingdom Hearts games, more specifically in KHI and KHII, that our regular party members, Donald and Goofy can be a real pain in the ass at times, as in, they play against you instead of with you Donald doesn't heal you when he want you to, Goofy for the most part wastes items, Donald does the same, they both die way too easily even with high levels of HP, overall, they feel like more of a hindrance to your entire gameplay experience than an aid.

 

This is something that can definitely be improved on considering KHIII is going to be on current-gen consoles. Both Donald and Goofy can have better AI intelligence and should be able to follow assigned AI patterns a lot better. In KHI, this was the best represented; in that game, you could assign actions or patterns for Donald and Goofy in a number of battle scenarios, like attacking, defending and using items. In KHII, the system was dumbed down a bit and din't give you as many options as KHI did. In KHIII, the KHI system should make a comeback and obviously have the improvements I've been talking about. With all that in place, I think the party members can be a lot more tolerable to deal with; they shouldn't really have to be tolerable at all if you think about it, but all the same.

 

So there's my piece. What do you think about all this?

I agree Sensei. Donald (Dolan) and Goofy (Gooby) have been useless for FAR too long! They must get their act together or be Norted! ...Wait, no, I don't want them you can keep them! xD

 

I also can't stand it when Donald heals you...at the same time as you heal yourself...or even after...FUUUUUU---

 

And Goofy... ...you're an embarrassment...

I would be happy enough if Donald would stop to cast spells belonging to the same element as that of the targeted enemy. That would make me cry happiness tears

A pretty interesting and important topic. Also the reaction command button should be different from the "call" button. It was annoying in HD 1.5 to call Donald/Goofy, and when the enemy got in range, Sonic Blade or Strike Raid would activate, blowing both my MP and my time. AND, when I want Donald/Goofy to focus on the little guys while I'm on a boss, it's annoying to have them come over and then all the small Heartless gang up on me and take me out. Great example: Anti-Sora in Wonderland (where I was only level 36).

I agree sensei but. Lets just slap a gigantic shield on Dolan and give Gooby a Sword and Shield and call it a day.

On the flip side, Fantasia and KnockSmash are the two most devastating moves in KH2, so lets not be too hard on Donald and Goofy. I do agree that the party AI does need to be tweaked so that your party requires less constant supervision, or at least implement a system like in Final Fantasy XII where you can give your party members specific targets or jobs in combat so that you know they're doing what you want them to do.

Really I couldn't agree more! It very annoying when you have Larxene, Axel, or Vexen down to the last bar and you summon Donald in CoM and he gives them all their health back, instead of healing you like you need him to! Or in Kingdom Hearts 2 when he heals you milliseconds after you heal yourself! Square fix it!

I really hope they improve their AI. Even if it's kinda difficult to make them do whatever you want, it would be fine if they wouldn't do b******t, like healing you when you've just healed or casting the same magic of the hearless, that's a bit annoying.

I think there's a good chance of this happening honestly. I mean, in 3D, the Dream Eaters healed you when you needed it, didn't use or waste items, and even buffed you up at times. Not to mention, the Link Attacks help too, and they don't die easily unless they're underlevelled and you're on a High difficulty. The only problem with them is that if they die, after 30 seconds, they die permanently and turn into Dream parts. And if you try to revive them, it takes mashing the A button for like 5 seconds to do it, and the more they die, the longer it takes, which can be bad.

c'mon gooby is plenty useful & i like how doland heals me when my health's already full :D

It would be nice for Donald and the other party members to be more useful.
