When did it become a bad thing? When did it become synonymous with bad storytelling? I thought Fanservice meant giving the (majority of) fans exactly what they wanted? Now I'm not talking about huge tits and gratuitous panty shots, but something like giving a popular side character a more integral part of the story. I just don't see why something like that is seen as the creators just giving up.

It... vexes me.

It is not a bad thing, I just do not like it when a series gets milked because of it. If a story has a complex story I feel it should be decent length but not too long, and not to add fan's input. It takes away the whole, gasp moments and the reason Doujinshi's exist. An author should tell their story and let the fans decide whether they like it or not. If they feel so strongly about how the series is this is what fuels passion for others to write their own stories. Plus without fan input it gives less stress on an author and having to deal with an editor.

It has a bad reputation because when it's used, it's not always seen as a good idea.  When blatant appeal gets in the way of basic storytelling, it can leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Of course, the trick is determining what blatant appeal is legitimately detrimental to the storyline, and what's passable.  Thus, you get oh-so lovely flame wars.

Sword Art Online *cough*

It's because it's become synonymous with perverted scenes. Fanservice in the sense of, say, developing a character or giving a popular character more time in the spotlight is totally fine. I can't stand the perverted type of fanservice though.

It's just the minority complaining about how what they want isn't being accommodated because of the general fandom... At least I think that what means when used in a derogatory sense. Also because of how it is associated with skimpy girls by those pesky and annoying feminists calling it out and almost naked guys hogging the screen to shut them up. Not that I'm complaining of course. *Stares at Kairi*

I wanna say SoRiku as an example, but I'm pretty sure that's the majority, leaving SoKai as the minority. Noooooooooo xD

It isn't a bad thing overall. But it can be bad......MGS4

People don't know what they actually want.

The problem in general with fanservice is that it tends to be shoehorned into the story at the expense of otherwise good writing. It's basically sticking something into the plot that doesn't need to be there, and sometimes doesn't even make sense, but the writer does it to satisfy a faction of the fanbase, or to insert their own needling desires.

For instance, the numerous appearances of Pyramid Head post Silent Hill 2, in spite of the fact that his existence is tied specifically to James.

I'm fine with nothing too sexually explicit. <--- I hate this actually -_-"

But a character whose existence is the result of pure fan service is just rubbish.

Peace!
