Nintendo Needs To Name Their Systems Better

Featured Replies

3DS is a fine name, but Wii U is just poorly named. Reggie's explanation behind the name is just bad and he should feel bad.

"New 3DS" is meh, perhaps annoying to hear because I've had enough of "new" this and that. (New SMB, what's next? New New SMB?)

Edit: watched the video, it almost sums up what I think about the names.

HUE HUE HUE NINTENDO 69, NINTENDO 69!

Anyway I was never really into gaming news but sense I was hyping for the 3DS, I grew interested in a new Wii. I already had figured the Wii U was the WII TWO!!

And I find NES to be a weird name buuuuuuuut it fit back when it originally releases

Wait the New 3DS is actually a brand new system, like the normal 3DS was to the DS?

Isn't it like the DSi?

Well, it  kinda is a new system since Nintend has confirmed that the "New" 3DS will have exclusive games on it.

DSi had its own games yet its not a brand new system like the 3DS. It could be just like that.

Yeah. You could be right about that.

For the Wii U at least I hoped they'd change the design of the logo instead of reusing the logo of the original Wii with a small u on the lift

but I agree that the name New 3DS is stupid, like what Jwittz said they could've named it Super 3DS(since it has buttons colored like the SNES) or the 3DSi

Iwata is bad at naming new systems

It is like the DSi and if we wanna go back in time....like the Gameboy color was to the original Gameboy

Seriously Nintendo really needs to do a better job at naming their systems. I remember back when they first announced the Nintendo 3DS and a lot of people I knew had thought that it was just an add-on or something to the Nintendo DS and was just some small upgrade to the original DS. When it was really a new system (which, of course, is part of the Nintendo DS family) with better graphics, great upcoming games, and some pretty interesting features. I remember how hyped I was for it and even bought it on launch day. Now we have the Wii U. Which a loooooot of people see it as an add-on to the Wii. And I have to say I can't really blame the people, especially casual gamers who don't follow gaming news, who are confused with the system. I mean the console does look too similiar to the Wii, plus the fact that it's even called the "Wii U"? I mean really Nintendo? You couldn't give it a better name? Look, I understant that it's a successor to the Wii but they could have least done a better job with trying to make it seem like it's a next gen console (Yes I consider the Wii U a next gen system. Screw all the haters who say it sin't next gen). Too many people think it's not a next gen system because of the name alone. ANd now we have the "New" 3DS. Another system that i think should have gotten a better name. Becuase you know what's gonna happen when people try to buy them at a game store? Well, let's take a look at would will happen shall we?

Yup. This is what will happen when people can't see the difference between the regular 3DS and the "New" 3DS. This is why I hope that whenever Nintendo makes their new, next gen handheld/home console that they give it a better name. But somehow, a part of me thinks that won't happen. I mean, whatever happened with making good, creative names like the Nintendo64, the GameCube, and the NES/SNES? Those has good names that didn't confuse people. They should really find someone who can make creative names for their consoles.

nintendo 64 was creative? its just the company name and 1 aspect of the technical specs. altho i cant agree with you more with the gamecube. i actually really like the name! ^_^ and i cant even tell you how much i agree with your post. its something that nintendo REALLY needs to stop.

Well, the name "Nintendo 64" felt like a creative name to me. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

New 3DS is the only name that I think is truly bad. Hope they change it to 'Super 3DS' or something in the West, otherwise there's gonna be tons of confusion.

well its definetly a pretty catchy name! :D

i just facepalmed when i heard about the "new 3DS"

Sure i understand that in Japan people will be able to understand the difference between the 3DS and the "new 3DS" in a conversation since they'll pronounce it like "nyu suree dee esu" instead of "atarashii suree dee esu" (atarashii means new)

BUT COME ON NINTENDO. this is going to lead to a lot of weird conversations in the future in english speaking countries. I do like the "new 3DS"'s new design lol.

(dammit i should have saved up for a new nintendo 3DS....) It's everything about the 3DS that i've wanted. NOW I HAVE TO SAVE UP  MORE MONEY. Apparently i've taken a huge liking to it. I like it much better than all of the 3DS consoles. since its got better capabilities. It's like the DSi times 10...

If you dun take the time to understand what you're buying, it's not really the company's fault for your failure of not looking into the subject matter. It's like buying an Expansion Pack without already owning the base game.

All I'm saying is, the video is false in the sense that a case for XC 3D will have the word "new" written next to the 3DS on it. Wouldn't that perk your interests? Wouldn't you wonder why all the games you've been buying have never said "new" on the actual case, but this one does? Reading the case of an expansion pack reveals that the game in your hands isn't even playable unless you have ownership over the required properties first. Same goes for games for the "new" 3DS. It should note that those games are only playable if you own the "new" 3DS. Taking the time to read something and not being a lazy, asshole consumer saves people from wasting their time with your shit excuse to complain about something.

They aren't changing it. The Australian launch confirmed it.

This actually makes some sense, though I still think the name could be better for the New 3DS as I don't have a problem with the Wii U's name aside from the design of the logo

But hey I don't originate from an English speaking country and English is my second language so what do I know

For the fist time I saw it I though hm 4DS? That is also not creative but at least a better name.

I got used to the Wii U name after a while and half the time I tend to call it a Wii when I talk to my friends about it but this New 3DS is just confusing. Like, I fully understand what is different about the system in comparison to the 3DS and 2DS and the "New" does translate well in some cases (like I told my mum that they announced a New 3DS with extra buttons and stuff and she understood it) but the only thing stupid about it is the name. It doesn't need to be called "New 3DS" at all, it's so unnecessary.

The "New 3DS" really is just another DSi situation but even then I feel the DSi did a better job at differentiating itself from the DS and DS Lite. Sure people were like, "lol it's just a DS with a camera" but still. Maybe the New 3DS won't be as confusing as we think it will given that the keyword is "new" but it's such a stupid word to be in a console system name. Super 3DS would've been better given it's colourful buttons and more powerful CPU but clearly Nintendo didn't think hard enough.

I agree, pepole think that the Wii-u is just and add-on to the Wii because of it's name, even the games have only Wii in their title so pepole are getting confused.
