The reason why I Prefer story over gameplay in video games

Posted

Ever since I picked up a my very first video game When I was little, I always played it for the story. I don't really care how the gameplay is in a video game unless it is like sonic 06. I respect the people who prefer gameplay over story in a video game and the ones that prefer gameplay and story equally because we all have are own opinions.?

wow! i actually have felt the exact same way for years! thats why i play rpgs on the easiest difficulty. so i can experience the story easier. xD

well the story is the more important in the major part of games (for example diablo 3 don't have an so fabulous story to me, but is fun play it, expecially in co op) but if the game is great but is unplayable i don't know the use of it :D

anyway the last thing i look is the graphic.... an example? KH1.5.. i would buy it even if it wasn't in HD xP

of course every three of them are important (i mean if i have a PS4 and i have a new game with PS2 graphic is a little uncalled... expecailly if payed a decent price xP )

Funny thing you brought up Sonic 2006. That was more or less my first real Sonic game, and at the time, I didn't really notice any of the flaws with the gameplay or the story, I just loved it for what it was for me, my first Sonic game. Nowadays I see it for what it is and I recognize all it's flaws, but I still love the game to death and it will always have a special place in my heart.

As for gameplay vs. story, it's hard to say with me, but I usually tend to side with the story side a little more. Sure, the gameplay is probably the most important aspect of the game and should always be given top priority, but the story has just as much importance. I mean, when you get down to it, Sonic Generations is a fun game. The gameplay is probably the best I've ever seen in the series and every stage is just as addicting as the last. However, the story is very thin, it doesn't hold much of a presence, and it moves way too quickly. A story can flesh out a game and give it a good pace. The last thing you want is for a game to be over as soon as it starts getting fun, especially when it's so fun that you want it to last a good amount of time. Unless you plan on giving the gameplay a long playtime experience (such as, say, over 50 stages), the story is necessary to make your game last and not feel like some kind of arcade game that you need to beat within an hour (unless that's the style you are going after, but it doesn't work with everything.).

I say that ideally, both the gameplay and the story should be 100% in quality. However, very few of these kind of games exist, if any, as the balance tends to get mixed in different ways. However, there are several games that get close enough, and I'd confidently say that Kingdom Hearts is one of those series that gets a pretty good balance between the two. It's not perfectly balanced, but it's enough for me to not think that one is taking priority over the other (although opinions will differ between fans). If other game series, like Sonic, balanced their content out a little more like how the KH series has, but in their own ways of course, I'm pretty sure that they would make for much more enjoyable experiences with almost everyone. I want my games to be really super mega fun, but I also want a really deep or entertaining story that keeps me invested and makes me feel like the game actually lasts like a fine meal, rather than a tasty snack.

Since I mostly play Nintendo games I usually play games for their gameplay.I think that we can all agree that Mario,Zelda,Metroid,Pokemon or Kirby are not exactly the type of games you play for a deep story and great character developement

but I do play games like Kingdom Hearts,Final Fantasy or the Tales games for their story and not the gameplay,so when a Final Fantasy game doesn't have a good story,it hurts the game a lot, like Final Fantasy V and if the story is amazing I can overlook a lot of the game's problems and the best exemple of that is probably Crisis Core FFVII,I never realised it until I started thinking about it,but the gameplay of Crisis Core is good, but not great and it is kinda repetitive, there's no world to explore, the game is VERY linear and there's barely any sidequests, but the story was so good that I didn't notice all those flaws.

And then there are games like Xenoblade Chronicles,Earthbound or Mother 3 that I like the story as much as I like the gameplay.

So I can't really say that I prefer one over the other,it just depends on the game really.

While I usually leans towards story I believe that both Story and Gameplay should be balanced in a way that both contribute to each other instead of hindering themselves by having one overshadows the other

There are some games that did the story over gameplay thing right like Metal Gear( and that series is 90% cutscenes and 10% gameplay) but you have to make sure that what you play during cutscenes isn't boring or badly designed.....otherwise you'll get a game like Final Fantasy XIII where the story overshadows a mediocre gameplay of narrow hallways that also hinders what's already a mediocre story to begin with.

Though to counter that there are games that have little story if not none yet they have a fantastic gameplay like most Mario games

Well to be fair what Zelda lacks in character development it makes up for with the lore

As convoluted as it is I love the Zelda timeline

I used to be an all story guy then I played a game with gameplay so bad I had to put in down after 2 hours and I haven't touched it since. Now I believe there needs to be a balance.

Pretty much the same with me: I prefer to enjoy the story, rather than be bogged down with impossible boss fights.

Yeah that's true and I also like the Zelda timeline, but if you take any Zelda game as its standalone game the story is not that great even Twilight Princess,Skyward Sword or Hyrule Warriors. But they are making some progress,Groose was a great character,Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword Zelda and Midna are also interesting characters.

If I enjoy it then it's good and I think that's what matters at the end of the day.Sure the lore is optional to check out but when you read it it enriches the world of Zelda for me and sure while the character department is lacking I still the lore is great enough to make up for it.

And occasionally they had great characters like the ones you've mentioned.Groose is literally a meme material at his finest and Midna is my favorite character in the whole series

That's not really saying WHY you do, you just said that you do like them... Just saying.

Also, considering that they're called games, I find gameplay to be more important. The only games that have ever made me quit playing because of a crappy story are Final Fantasy XII, and Final Fantasy X-2. Of course, gameplay also factored into those. I play video games to challenge myself, and consider stories to just be a nice bonus. No matter how good a game's story is, I won't play it if the gameplay sucks. I'll never play Chi again because the gameplay was incredibly boring. Even though it's now canon and necessary to KHIII's plot, I'm still not putting up with bad gameplay.

I think I did say why because I said that I like story over gameplay because even since I was little I would pick up a game and HOPE that it will have a good story to show. I still do that today. Sorry if I didn't elaborate on it earlier.
