We know Ansem SOD travelled back in time to give Young Xehanort time travel powers yes? Ansem then waited at Destiny Islands for 60-70 years (I wonder how many sandcastles he built) whilst Young xehanort went forwards in time and collected different versions of himself. But how on earth did he return to his own time? I thought the KH time travel method was you leave your body behind and can ONLY travel forwards? And another thing that just sprung to mind: If you have to leave your body behind then how come YX looks normal in KH3D and in the secret cutscene with Braig? Am I not understanding the rules of time travel or is this just shabby writing?

I guess that's just how it works there. He can only move forward in time till he eventually is brought back to where he left his body

It's easy. Xehanort has the ability to travel through time. But only for a limited time.

I don't think young xehanort had to leave his body behind only Ansem SOD did in order to give YX the time travel ability. Once YX finished gathering the other xehanorts he was supposed to automatically go back to his own time and forget everything about the future except for his desire to go to other worlds. Eventually he became the crazy/manipulative/epic old xehanort that we know and love.

I think there's a time limit on the Xehanort method of time travel.

He traveled to Xehanort before he left Destiny Islands and gave him time manipulation powers. Doing this put all future Xehanort's into a state in which they could all travel through time. The laws of time travel give the traveler only a certain timeframe to accomplish whatever there goal is. It is implied that the timeframe is reliant on key predestined events. Once that window passes the traveler is forced back to his own time with their memories erased( depending on their point of origin). However it should be noted that the method of time travel that Ansem used is not the only method of travel available. Yen Sid used a different method to send Sora and Riku into the past. Merlin also has used a different method for Sora.

Wasn't he supposed to go back as soon as a specific time limit was reached ?

And yet, how on Earth did Xehanort leave Destiny Islands in the first place? I initially assumed that it's possible the time-travel might have had something to do with his escape, but that doesn't account for his initial departure from the world, before Ansem time-traveled back. Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

It's possible that a Keyblade Master visited the islands, met Xehanort, decided to train him and become the his and Eraqus' Master, kind of like how Terra did with Riku, excluding the training part.
