Sora's attitude towards Org XIII members in KH2

Posted

Bit of background here, skip to the 3rd paragraph if you want to get to the idea of this post, but mind you this is a long post:

Lately, I've been seeing a lot of fans voicing dislike at how Sora acted towards some Organization members in KH2/2FM- saying that Sora's animosity towards them were out of character for him. And I agree to an extent, the way he felt the need to remind some members that they didn't have hearts was a bit mean for Sora. Especially when he also felt the need to try and reason with Xemnas at the end of KH2 and how he didn't attack Axel on sight when he found out he had taken Kairi. Hell, the KH2 manga showed Sora actually thinking about what he was doing, which seems more like the actual Sora. And there doesn't really seem to be a real concrete answer as to why Sora was so hostile to some members- other than that they were a threat to the safety to the worlds and to his friends. Which does seem like a legitimate reason, but so was Maleficent in KH2, and Sora wasn't as rude to her.

BUT what if I told you I have thought of another reason why, where this animosity stems from, and that Sora has acted this way before?

The answer lies in memories- yes I'm taking about Chain of Memories. CoM was Sora's first encounter with the nature of Nobodies, their original cold, calculating nature. And it was CoM that first showed Sora truly angry. Marluxia's and Larxene's plans to use Namine to tamper with Sora's memories also involved making him angry by teasing him about not remembering Namine, making him feel bad about it, isolating him from Donald and Goofy, and fueling his competitive nature with Riku through Repliku and thereby also isolating him from Riku. All this made Sora angry at not just the Organization members, but at anyone who try to tell him something was wrong. So,when Sora did face Larxene, Axel, Vexen and Marluxia in battle, he didn't care if he destroyed them, that he made other people(for all he knew, they WERE people) disappear. And honestly, that's pretty freaking cold for Sora- even if he was trying to protect Namine. And this angry, cold part of Sora character seemed to disappear after CoM when his memories were restored; but the message of CoM was that feeling and memories stay in the heart even after they've been forgotten or tampered with, and that the right key would bring those back to the surface. So, this part of Sora's personality never went away- it just remained dormant until Sora was given the proper motivation. Anyone else notice Sora wasn't as hostile to Org XIII members in KH2 until AFTER he found out they might have kidnapped Kairi? And that after he found this out, he was ready to beat down any Organization member and Heartless in his way, especially after defeating Demyx? Kairi's kidnapping was what brought Sora's rage back to the surface- that's why he acted so hostile to Organization members in KH2. It wasn't truly out of character for Sora because it WAS a part of his character- just a part we don't see often.

I always thought that aggressive attitude towards the organization was actually Roxas heart reacting on him. Remember when DiZ told Roxas to share some of his hatred with Sora, because he was far too nice for his own good? I want to believe that's why he's like that.

EDIT: Also, I just realized that Roxas doesn't "trully merge" with Sora until they fight right after they arrive to TWTNW. You can see he's calmer when he fights Saïx, the guy who is keeping Kairi in the castle and made him beg on his knees for her. Or when he fights Luxord and Xigbar (even though he really doesn't have any reasons to be mad at Luxord).

I agree pretty much all around. Sora tends to try to want to help anyone he considers his friend as much as he can, and anyone who gets in the way of that kind of pisses him off, like you said in CoM and KH2 when Namine and Kairi were respectively kidnapped, or in DDD when he kept falling deeper into dreams to try and stop Xemnas and help the people connected to his heart he keeps seeing visions of.

He's a really really nice guy, so much so that it tends to blind him, and I like that; it's an actual character flaw that makes him more interesting, and Sora doesn't get too many of those.

Doesn't really explain his attitude in CoM when Roxas is a distinctly different entity.

I think it's a mix of both, ultimately. It's Sora's anger at the Organization in CoM AND Roxas' anger at them because of what they put him through. It bubbles up into a bit of irrational rage that he doesn't even legitimately understand until the tail-end of the game, due to his memories having been wiped and also not knowing exactly what Roxas went through until DDD.

But I like how the scene where he yells at the Organization, especially after Demyx's death is actually portrayed as out-of-character for him. After he's taunting them with 'Anybody from the Organization who'd like to be next??", Donald's like, 'Yo, chill out, brah" and even Sora is kind of at a loss for words for how he acted. He just gives a sheepish grin and is like, 'Oh, yeah, sorry.' So, the game makes it a point that Sora acts the way he does for a reason.

The way the organization members treated Sora and some even hostile towards Roxas, they kinda deserved it. Also if you played KH3D, you know that they lied and that they really did have hearts and decided to create 13 Xehanort vessels proving that they don't deserve sympathy for all they have done.

From an out-of-universe perspective, I can see why things ended up this way.  There's a different design intent between CoM and KH2 - CoM wants to subvert expectations, while KH2 wants to live up to expectations.  As a consequence, there are times that characters react in different ways to similar situations.  For example, Sora is more of a "paladin" when interacting with the Org in KH2, because he's living up to the audience expectation of "Good guy defeating bad guys." Sadly this also leads to contradictions at times.

You're bang on the nose in that Sora becomes more hostile after he learns about the kidnapping, in fact I'd say there's a very clear line in his behaviour!

Angry Sora, all the yummy.

Who wouldn't get angry having their waifu kidnapped?

Even if he never had shown any signal of anger, that would be the perfect motivation for him to.

I actually find nothing much wrong with his attitude towards the members. They did have no hearts and the organization first ruined his memories and then bring ruin to the worlds and then went so far as to imprison Kairi and use her as bait and feed Sora's anger. Besides, in the end, it was better they were defeated because they regained their hearts and became human again.

They didn't lie. Most members of Organization XIII thought that they didn't have hearts and that completing Kingdom Hearts would make them whole again. That's what Xemnas told them. The only ones who knew about the true goal of the Organization were Xemnas and Xigbar (Saix could have known as well, but this hasn't been confirmed).
