Sony admits mobile gaming hurts chances of new handheld

Posted

That's a tough question," he replied when asked about a PlayStation Vita 2. "People have mobile phones and it's so easy to play games on smartphones," Yoshida said. "And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.

"I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun - there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.

"So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming."

As long as it doesn't hurt console gaming...

I'm so glad I didn't buy a PS Vita.

But it's kind of sad to see that video games are moving to mobile. I hope it doesn't affect consoles too.

as long as console gaming hold it's own then meh... PSP had a lot of good titles, but Vita is just terrible.

Only vita games that are worth it are god eater, tearaway, freedom wars, murasaki baby, ff x/x-2 hd, uncharted and killzone. The rest is just indie games and psp downloadable games. Such a shame... i just keep comparing it to my psp, ds and 3ds and its so shitty.

Freedom Wars, too!I 100% agree with Sony. The mobile industry is very harmful to gaming itself, as it's a "quick way to fame" in most cases with the least effort for innovation (Flappy Bird, that Kim Kardashian game, Subway Surfers). Don't get me wrong: I like SOME mobile games, and some are quite fun in actuality but I feel as if it's slowly redefining games, as if saying they're time-wasters rather than immersive stories like RPGs offer, or a sort of test for the competitive side of ourselves, like Fighting games allow.

That's what handhelds were for a lot of people: "time-wasters". Well you say that and yet Square Enix can make 16 billion in six months off Final Fantasy Record Keeper before it was even released outside of Japan.

even if handhelds were doing well i think a successor to the vita right now would be pretty pointless

To be fair, most games like Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, and even the original platformer games on even the Gameboy Color took maybe more than 10-15 hours to beat. You'd have to put in time to it.

On the contrary, looking at many of the mobile games, you'd see that you'd maybe play them for five minutes, maybe for hours, but once you got bored you were done with it and you never had to go back to complete a story or the like.

Square Enix is a huge exception to this. From TWEWY: Solo Remix to Drakerider, Square Enix continues to make devoted games even on the mobile platform. That's what I wish developers would do more on mobile.
