"They'll slowly awaken the real you" - If the Absent Silhouettes had a story purpose in KH2.

Posted

This is something that has been concerning me. When Demyx explains the Absent Silhouettes, he says to Sora that they will "slowly awaken the real you". Now I know this might be something that doesn't mean anything and it's just something to give the Silhouettes some meaning, but what if it meant that after Sora beats them, he regains his memories of Castle Oblivion, or at least have some recollection of them? The memories are inside him, and they aren't gone. So what if by defeating the Silhouettes, he regains, at the least, faded bits and pieces of those memories? If this was a thing in KH2, imagine how Sora would be like if he had regained the memories after defeating the silhouettes, then finally getting all of them back after beating the Marluxia Silhouette.

With Roxas's rage against the Organization mixed in with Sora's, Sora would've been out for blood. If he had his memories of Castle Oblivion back when Saïx said no to Sora's request to see Kairi, Sora would've done more than just say that Saïx was rotten. He would've attacked him. He would've had more anger at the remaining members. He would've stormed the Castle that Never Was to save Kairi. He would've shown less sympathy for Xemnas[maybe with just a staredown].

That would have been cool, but it also would have required additional cutscenes than the few extras we get in Olympus Coliseum. As is, I feel all of it is pretty shoehorned into the story and don't really consider it 'canon'. I don't even really consider the Cavern of Remembrance all that canon either since it contributes nothing and doesn't really make any sense when you think about it.

I see your point. Still would've been cool! :3

Yea, since the silhouettes are technically "DLC", don't consider anything in the FM versions besides the added cut-scenes as canon.  Which makes me wonder about the Xemnas fight in KH1FM..

I think it's a really sympathetic aspect of Sora's character that he doesn't remember castle oblivion at this point.  Leaving those memories to be re-awakened in KHIII is something I'm really interested in seeing.

That would have been a great way for those memories to re-surface. As far as I am concerned, even though Sora doesn't remember Castle Oblivion, that doesn't the events never happened. Like you said, those memories are probably locked away somewhere within his heart. He even should have Roxas' memories within him. Would've given Sora a stronger motive to beat the heck out of the Organization.

Eh, either it was meant to reawaken his lost CO memories or it was meant to stir Roxas from within him (the "real you", as they keep referring to him as Roxas). Either way it was to temper Sora into fighting, which would ultimately help them in their goals.

If those memories are reawakened in KH3 we might have a super mad Sora on the loose!

That'd be a refreshing change, Sora emoting emotions that's not of the archetypal hero.

"Roxas, take the wheel!"

that would have been a cool way to implement the extra boss fights into the story but it definitely would have opened a huge can of worms that KH2 just wouldn't have time to properly address. If anything that sounds like the set up to an alternate story route (if KH was that kind of series) where choosing to fight all the Absent Silhouettes would have placed you on a story route that involved Sora and co. doing something else like trying to rescue Namine directly or something.

Makes me think of the first Persona game where there are two story paths and by choosing to do a certain action you can end up playing through a different scenario rather than the main one.

anyways i always thought that the phrase "slowly awaken the real you" was referring to the abilities you can get when fighting the AS

Huh, now that you mention it, that's a very intriguing prospect indeed!  It's odd that we never got any kind of awakening after beating the Silhouettes, but maybe Demyx's words meant that defeating the Silhouettes would awaken the real him sometime down the road!  KHIII, perhaps? :3

The absent silhouettes I think are what happens to nobodies defeated. They become just images. These merge with the heart freed from its dark shell and forge together to awaken the "real you".

I always thought that the absent silhouettes were the Org trying to awaken roxas inside sora. Like defeating the organization members would jar him or effect him sleeping inside sora. Defeating his old comrades and letting out some of the rage would help wake him up- which is what Demyxs mission essentially was in confronting sora. And the cavern of rememberance was going off the same idea.
