what I mean by the tales of games are games like this one: Posted Image

I have played 2 "tales of" games. One of which is Tales of Graces^. I have played and finished the game last year. It is my favorite "tales of" game by the way. Right now I'm currently playing Tales of the Abyss and I haven't finished the game yet obviously .

  • Any Tales fan should know that Xillia 2 has the best story in the series, hands down.

  • That's simple.   Luke Fon Fabre's name means "Light of the Sacred Flame" Asch changed his name to distinguish himself from Luke, since he was no longer Luke Fon Fabre. The name Asch sounds like "Ash

Tales of Phantasia already did time travel

I haven't finished that yet. Spoilers! Please don't! :O

I'm not really counting Xillia 2 cuz it's really alternate dimensions not time travel

It might be interesting. I mean, I felt Xillia 2 did alternate dimensions fairly well, which is somewhat similar. I do think time travel can make an interesting plot (obvious by my current avatar being from Steins;Gate), but I'd be very wary. It would require world building with similar attention to detail as Tales of the Abyss had (which most of the other games don't) and would have to be very careful in following its own rules.

I'd rather they try something new (like time travel) than do something with spirits and mana again, though.

but in a way it's sort similar to time travel. Not saying it's time travel though. Remember in this certain fractured dimension that all of the cast from Xillia 1 died 10 years in the future?

Guys, I have a question for you guys about the tales series:

Is it a fact that each tales game that gets released gets better, or is that just an opinion because honestly I liked Tales of the Abyss more than xillia even though that game came out before xillia

Nah, that would entirely be up to the individual's opinion. From a purely technical standpoint, you might be able to say each new entry gets better. But just because the engine gets more "advanced" doesn't necessarily mean it's better from an enjoyment standpoint. For example, while Vesperia's combat system definitely improved upon the mechanics of the battle system, I still preferred Abyss because I liked each character having their own Overlimit bar and though FoF Circles where more interesting than the fatal strikes (that's what they're called, right?).

As for story and characters, its all opinion on that end. For as many people who will praise the characters or story of a game, there will be those who hate on it. Sure, if someone meticulously combed through and analyzed the entire script of all Tales games, they'd likely find that some just flat out have better writing than others. But that doesn't mean that the one with the best writing will be the most enjoyed, just that it was the most technically impressive.

Short Version: You could make the argument that the games get more "technically impressive," but overall it isn't a fact that Tales game is better than the one released before it. It's just up to opinion.

Absolutely not and I don't think I've ever heard somebody say that before. Usually when a new game is released everybody shits on it about how it's just not like their favourite Tales game from the early 00s or something. Then when the next Tales is announced, the hate turns to that game instead.

Will there ever be a balance for the people who like the casual gameplay(people who like attacking a lot and use artes from time to time) and for people who like using magic(artes) more than anything else in the tales series (basically the people who love tales of graces' gameplay) without throwing away one of them?

I think it would just be awesome if namco somehow managed to put both of the playstyles in future tales game and barely anybody would be complaining.

How about a mana system? I'm not very fond of the idea of mana though because it would take away from what makes the Tales games so unique in gameplay. But having mana might balance it out a bit.Or the payoff for using magic could be increased so that people would use it more. But at the same time, it shouldn't be so easy to spam normal attacks and kill enemies.

I find nothing wrong with spamming normal attacks on enemies because that's how I usually play the tales games. I think that there should be at least a thing that let's you do combos on enemies with a limit to it. I personally find it boring if a tales game doesn't have any good combos and the only thing I can use are artes (Tales of Graces).

Yeah, spamming attacks is very convenient. You don't want something complicated when you are grinding. I suppose the game could benefit more with combos, but I feel then it becomes too action. Like it might start becoming too much like say Kingdom Hearts or FFXV both of which are action RPGs. But the combos you can do in Xillia are nice and they should really build on those.

I totally agree. Maybe they might do that with tales of Berseria.

or is that just an opinion.

Honestly I LOVE focusing on the story of the game.

I think what draws most people to the characters in Tales games is they're always initially presented as straightforward, clichéd anime tropes but then almost always subverted.

I think the Xillia games do a great job with character development while having a great story with interesting world building that's why they are my favorite of the series. As for Symphonia and Graces, the story are good, but its really because the characters are so funny and interesting and its especially apparent in Symphonia 2,having uninteresting protagonists and villians really shows how boring a Tales game can be without good characters

I think that Tales of Graces f is the longest tales game i've played plus it has extra content in the game that make it even longer.

I've only played Tales of the Abyss (awesome game btw) so i say this the longest ;P

Yeah, I have to agree!  Out of all the 4 Tales games I've played, Graces F has indeed been the one that's taken me the longest to beat! :3

I would have to agree, luckily it is a good enough game that it doesn't feel like it drags on.

Tales of the Abyss seemed to go on forever when I played it. A mostly enjoyable game but wow it felt long

Abyss is the longest because you don't want that game to end. It was brilliant.

I respect your opinion, but I felt like that game dragged on SO much. The gameplay was boring. which made the game feel EVEN longer.

Graces took me like 70 hours to beat (including the future arc). So that was the longest for me. I think Abyss was actually my fastest completion (either that or Hearts R), because I loved it so much I powered through it. I missed every side quest the first time though (it was my first tales game), so that may be why.

EDIT:

I feel like Xillia might actually be the shortest I've played, though. I did all of the sidequests in the game, and both sides of the story, and my final save file is at about 100 hours. Abyss and Vesperia are both at over 140 after 2 playthroughs, and Graces would definitely be up there if I did a second. Xillia 2 would take a while for the bonus dungeon and getting the debt repaid ending. Hearts R might be about the same length as Xillia, not sure how much side content I missed.
