Japanese Music - General Discussion

Posted

I dun think there is a thread like this but I'm sorry if there is.

Have you noticed that artists nowadays don't make meaningful songs? Artists usually talk about getting drunk, having sex, and "shawty's in da club"? While, Japanese music is so beautiful? Bands and singers such as Aqua Times, Flow, UverWorld, Utada, and Ayaka make great music with wonderful beats and lyrics. It makes me sad if this is gonna get worse in America as time goes on.

Discuss if you want.

I don't like music like that, I truly enjoy Japanese singers and music. I have a lot of anime songs on my iPod now, because they help me go to sleep (in a good way). I like some music made by Americans, but only the songs that have true meaning.

My phone is full of J-Pop and J-Rock. I can't stand this American music anymore.

i don't really care about meaning in song, just how good it sounds. and there are some classic j-songs:

Utada Hikaru (Obviously)

Kawaita Sakebi - Field of View (yu-gi-oh Season 0 theme)

Caramelldansen Metal - jh28 (lol, does it count? i think so)

eh, and others

Yeah, kind of.Japanese music sounds pure and calm at times. For example,Axel's voice actor in japanese sings a song named Angel Heart. And it's so beautifull and pure.My MP3 is filled with japanese songs.

I honestly really don't like J-pop, especially Utada Hikaru. >.> I prefer listening to music in a language that I can actually understand (which brings me to ask, why does everyone have this prejudice against American songs? Just because all of the popular songs are shit doesn't mean every song in English is) , but everyone has different opinons, so...

The only Japanese singers who's voices I can listen to are a.Nina (I think that's her name...), Eiko Shimiayama (something like that [i'm too lazy to look up their names, alright? xD]), Souchiro Hoshi, Daisuke Namikawa, Yuuki Hiro, and Uverworld.

And Vocaloids, if they count.

...

How come noone gives a shit about French music? /shot

I don't know any Japanese singers. I don't like or hate them. As long as it doesn't rape my ears I can listen to it even if the lyrics are corny and stupid as I don't understand Japanese except numbers up to ten.

I have Caramelldansen, on my Ipod, but that's mainly to piss off people by telling them I have a cool song and then I blast it in their ear. And that's not even a Japanese song, it's Swedish. However the sped up version was very popular in Japan for some reason.

Well, I also like French music but I can't get off topic here xD

[And Vocaloids ALWAYS count. xD]

Anyway, I like SOME American music. From bands like SafetySuit or Skillet. What I'm saying is, if this trend continues, American music will become something that we can't listen to when kids under 15 are present.

I agree so much.

A little off-topic here, but this is one of the most beautiful Japanese songs I've ever heard. (Turn on annotations for english subs.)

I listen to a wide variety of music.

IF YOU SEARCH HARD ENOUGH, THERE ARE GOOD ENGLISH BANDS.

You're just looking at all the mainstreem that comes first. If you actually try looking, you will find some decent bands. Look back to the oldies. Whatever floats your boat.

I listen to japanese songs because I like how the japanese language sounds. Its the same with many other languages I like to listen to. And haven't you noticed that Japanese people like to use english in their songs?

If you look hard enough, you will find awesome bands with awesome songs and awesome lyrics. Sometimes its not even all that hard. I bet there are some japanese songs that are as bad as American ones. Artist 'nowadays' are just the ones that everyone likes to talk about. You can't group all of the artist in America in one category.

Don't get me wrong, Japanese music is ok. But still.

I don't give any shits about french music because I dont give any shits about the french language. Bite me.

I agree, VRKH, a bunch of them are like that :(

There's no point, and no meaning.

A few bands I think do a good job, though. Superchic(k), for being yourself and not caring what others think or letting them drag you down. Their songs are very upbeat, and sometimes when I'm upset, I'll start singing songs like "Rock What You Got" or "So Beautiful".

I also think Skillet's songs are meaningful. I'm Christian, so their meanings will be different to some people, but I sing every morning on the way to school their songs about God, as my little praise session for the day, since my brothers have sports, and we usually can't make it to church.

But Japanese songs are very wonderful <3 Not that I always understand what they're saying xD But they have a point--a meaning. The music's very sweet. Though I'm pretty sure Japan's probably got it's share of rappers and Ke$sha's xD

Yes, there are many rappers in Japan. And Ke$sha's believe it or not. Anyway, I have absolutely no problem with American music except for rap(and most of those Disney Channel singers/bands) so I have no complaints. I've heard many songs with meaning in both Japanese and English, it just depends on the artist your listening to and the genre(sometimes.)

You tell me.

You obviously have not searched hard enough. America has so many great bands and music that are underrated and underground. Look and you'll find some xD There are more of them than there are of those stupid rappers.

And DLC, would Placebo count as French? Because I love them <3

German music is amazing too<3

America definitely has amazing bands. So does Japan. Every country has a few overrated ones though. :/ Personally, I hate both the Ke$ha style of things here, and the type of Japanese music that always sounds the. Exact. SAME. Those are pretty much the ones that are used in harem anime where the characters are all one-sided and pointless...

Japanese pop is better outside of anime, in my opinion.

Personally, I like K-pop the best.

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!!! They still have their heads screwed on right! xD

I love Ayumi Hamasaki. And Utada Hikaru. And Ayaka (forgot her last name), and the OTHER Ayaka, and Jyongri, and Mari Yaguchi!! YAY MARI YAGUCHI!!! SHe's AWESOME.

I like japanese songs I love italian songs too they are really beautiful when theres meaning in them..

I don't mean to necro this thread, but anyone hear "Dear," "Blue," "JGuild," or other songs by ViViD?

The way they dress confuses me, but I like the music, despite having no idea what it means.

I agree that Japanese music that we can't even understand without reading a translation is better than ALL pop music in English. I think this has very little to do with the meaning of the lyrics, and more to do with the fact that as we can't understand the voices as lyrics and spoken word the vocals become an extra instrument that can be appreciated whether the lyrics are meaningful or total generic word vomit. It helps that we see and hear these Japanese tracks and animies as we have a visual memory to the song that simply replaces the lyrical content. Something to think about perhaps....

Yeah, if people would try to search bands harder than actually just listening bands that they see on Youtube's frontpage or hear in radio they would get out from this stupid "All american music sucks and have no meaning" stereotype. And if you have actually listened Japanese lyrics, you should notice how extremely cheesy they are the most of time and many Japanese bands still use English in their songs. (now don't get me wrong, I have ton of Japanese bands I like)

and lol people, if you care about lyrics so much go and listen poetry

hey you agree with old 2010 me (dont worry i still like good ol english speaking bands more than anything else BUT THATS BECAUSE ITS IN MY OWN LANGUAGE)

but i like good lyrics sometimes, and sometimes I like cheesy shit because its stupidly funny.  Some people like lyrics because they're... an important part of the song? WHAT?

In other words, some bands use lyrics to spread a message, be it for a political reason, to tell a story, or a moral of some sort etc.  Some songs have lyrics go hand-in-hand with the instruments and other songs don't even need any vocalists.  Lyrics can be pretty firetrucking important to a song.

either way I still don't like generic ass bullshit like the stuff i hear on a modern rock countdown on the radio

but french is cool

I really think the only people who seriously think GOSH MAN ENGLISH MOOSIC IS SO STUPID XDDDD JAPANESE FTW are just weaboos or people who don't speak english/main language isn't english.  but the whole NO MEANINGFUL SONGS EVER stuff is really BS

I don't mean to go off topic, but under the post date, it says this thread is from two years ago.

I made a comment, and suddenly you guys have resumed like nothing happened, lol.

Jappanesse music imo is better than alot of the american crap music, I listen to Aqua Timez, Scandal, Rolling Star, Utada (duh) and Ayaka.

I'm losing faith in America's music generation. The only music I listen to in America is alternative.

I used to listen to linkin park, but they are kinda losing their old school touch.

the only band I truly listen to is the Goo Goo Dolls. Their music is meaningful.

Now speaking of Japanese music, you guys are very right about this. Mainly I listen to anything from twewy obviously, but I'm also listening to music from anime as well, such as Naruto and Bleach, and I tend to listen to Flow or sawa. I need to do more exploring in Japan's music and find something I like.

 • 2 weeks later...

I really like either or, American or Japanese music. I more often tend to listen to Japanese music though. Even if I can't really understand the words I do like the sound of it which is good enough imo.

Akfg (Asian Kung Fu Generation) is phenomenal.

I love Japanese music in fact I'm addicted to it. I love FLOW they are my favorite, next goes Hitomi Kuroishi I love her voice just perfect and then....supercel, the best voice I have ever heard in my life. Kylee has a pretty nice voice but I have heard only Daisuki Nano Ni so I can't judge if she's good or no
