I read the manga up to chapter 154 (Last time I read it was february) it started off alright, some scenes were great-like Ichigo and the kid with the glasses teaming up against that batch of Hollows, Ichigo getting his ass kicked by Renji etc. But the soul society was very poorly executed in my opinion.
Imagine if One Piece went from Alabasta to Enies Lobby within 2-3 episodes (2 chapters ish). There was no build up to the SS arc, due to Rukia's execution being imminent. The manga didn't give Ichigo and friends enough training to fight on par with the captains, so all the fights were worked WAY too much in their favour.
They'd been saying how powerful the captains like Kenpachi were and somehow Ichigo manages to beat 3 of them (Kenpachi, Renji and that bald dude) with like a week of training and very small breaks in between? Then Byakuya magically gives him a pass and lets Yoruichi go and train him. The plot was worked WAY too much in Ichigo's favour. Kenpachi was hyped up to be a badass and somehow Ichigo manages to just scrape a win despite fighting Renji prior to that? Then the Quincy kid with the glasses (forgot his name) magically beats that captain who physically abused his own accomplice (he's a robot) by using a fricking glove?
Then comes the biggest load of shit, the thing that was about to kill Rukia supposedly has the strength of what, a 1000 Zanpakutos or something more? Oh and magically Ichigo manages to stop it because now he's learned Bankai within a day or two? When practically a week or two ago he was struggling against Renji? Then the whole secret behind his power is revealed like 200-300 chapters later right?
Wow, the power levels seem ridiculously unbalanced and nonsensical. Ichigo was a good character though and so was Chad. The whole style of Bleach seems so awesome and innovative and so do all the concepts but the execution is awful. It frustrates me that such a great concept was thrown out the window because of bad writing. The art in the manga is pretty good though but some of the fight scenes are unclear, especially during the first volume.
