your parents. I know your parents are there to help us through in life, but in my case they've said things that have honestly offended me as a gamer when I was little and that continues to be the problem now. :( "This game is stupid!" "It is a fact that video games are dumb." It honestly hurts playing a video game with them around knowing that they will never agree with you at all because they think they know everything

I know the feeling, but take that and put it with everything you like.

This is not a negative comment directed at you or anyone else: Who cares?I put video games in the same category as books, movies, music, and TV shows. You can always find someone who agrees with you, and you can always find someone who disagrees with you. Don't worry so much about what other people think.Compared to the other things I just mentioned, the video game medium is still very young. Even though games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda were great, they were still very shallow "story-wise". It's only recently with games like The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite where games are getting complex. Not saying they are good games, just that they are two game "experimenting" with story in video games. Until these "type" of games become more common, older generations will just see them as toys.Video games are fun, and I certainly loved the ones I grew up with, but don't lose sleep over them. I'm not saying they are just for kids, but you need to realize their proper place of importance.

There probably is a reason for it dude, people don't hate for the sake of it. They've probably have had bad experiences with videogames, maybe they think you invest too much time on them or they've seen others do so, which has given them this image of gaming.

Gaming is still young.

Things would be different if parents grew up with games the same way most of us did.

I 100% agree with you.

To be completely honest, I come from a family of gamers. I'm a gamer because both my mom and my dad played video games. I sometimes here my mom rage at the TV at night when she plays COD or something.

Weeeell, my dad used to own a comic book shop, and he's got all kinds of classic video games. And he's been playing Dark Souls, Resident Evil, Borderlands, etc., so he's still on top of his game (ha!) when it comes to newer games. Sure, me and my dad and my brother don't always play the same games, but I love playing all kinds of games with my family. My mom liked Tetris, and I must say, she was a lot better at it than I expected.

I understand our families and parents are different, but my parents are very understanding parents to me and my brother. Whenever I hum Guile's Theme, they don't seem to care unless I hum too loud. In fact, sometimes they probably want me to embrace my love for video games. (Like Mario!)

So just because they disagree with you on video games means you could never play them the same way again when they are present? Are you sure you aren't making a blanket statement or over dramatizing what they are saying by claiming they say "this game is stupid and it's a fact they are"? I think you are. First of all, how old are you and how old are they? They have more life experience than you so maybe they know a lot more. Maybe they could sometimes act like they know it all and are wrong at times and refuse to admit it, but really, are you going to destroy your life because of a difference of opinion? They could have expressed that spending so much time with video games and not being productive is stupid. There are better things to do in life besides looking at a screen and pressing buttons for hours. You know, I noticed a few things here. First, this is somewhat of a similar situation when it came to other people having opinions like the one your parents may have. Second, you as a person take too much personally even though it has NOTHING to do with you WHATSOEVER. Third, you seem rather intolerant of hearing other opinions on video games that don't line up with yours because you, in the past, hated hearing other people daring to express their disapproval of video games and expressed that hatred too many times to count. If you think the whole world should have a good view of video games and say nothing bad about them, then be prepared to be disappointed every day all day and night. If you can't handle another person's disapproval of video games and then make an enemy out of them because of that, then you will be alone. You can't control what people say or do nor expect them to do it. In this case, you seem to have that expectation of others when it comes to video games and when they don't meet that expectation, you make an enemy out of them and sometimes make a pity party out of it or throw a fit of rage about it. This is not how you live life whatsoever and you can be above that. You have to decide to.

yeah, you're right, but as of now, I haven't found that part in my yet. I'll find it eventually, but I still won't forget what video games brought to me though

It's quite simple. School work, studying, being with family, being with friends, going somewhere, part time job, I could keep going and going. By the way, there is a difference between looking at a screen and pressing buttons for hours for entertainment and doing so for a job. The latter is part of professions for companies like what both my parents do. The former is for leisure. I hope everything I have said went in one ear and into your brain and not one ear and out the other because the last time I had to address this similar situation to you, it seemed to have gone in one ear and out the other.

My Super Nintendo was my mom's and she use to play it a lot. When I was very young she and my sister use to play lots of time.

To be honest, my mom and dad are okay with me playing video games. Not all the time, but you know what i mean.

And to this day, they're still in LOVE with games like Pac-Man, Centipede, and a few others i can't remember.

If your parents might like to know a REAL FACT let me tell you something: I´m from Mexico. I´m not as much of a gamer as other people is but I HAVE ALWAYS played KH in all of it´s variations. What could that possibly had given me? Well it encouraged me to LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE (english of course), I wanted to understand what was going on in the story and once I had the basics it helped me to practice a lot on my reading, grammar and speaking spelling. SECOND. It´s well known that videogames make people to be more strategic and plan before taking actions which is a good thing in real life once you start looking for a job or want to prepare for anything. THIRD videogames make people to be more agile, mentally speaking, since your reflex are always prepared for sudden problematics or situations. FOURTH it helps people to relax from the daily life problems, etc. etc.

I could go on and on in the benefits of playing videogames but we would be here all week. The point is you and them need to understand playing videogames is absolutely NOT DUMB. It could affect in your life if you are obsessed and play all day long obviously, like any other surfeit or excess.

Don´t you ever be ashamed of playing a videogame, just do it consciously and you´ll be more than fine ;)

"It is a fact that video games are dumb."

No, that's opinion. How about they look for actual facts and watch games with great stories before saying that kind of crap.

I kind of know that feeling. It was especially annoying when I was younger like in middle and high school. In my case, I think they were just worried about me and wanted me to focus more on school and other things. They would say things like I'm wasting my time playing, or video games can cause you to become violent. (Love when they play that card). It pissed me off when they said stuff like that, but I knew they had no idea what they were talking about so I never took it to heart. In the end I realized they were saying those things because they meant well, it's just that they were so wrong. Parents always try to do what's best for their kids, it's just that their approaches can be flawed sometimes. I'm wondering if this may be the case with your parents as well.

Nowadays though, they give me the freedom to do whatever I want as long as I have my priorities straight(studying, job hunting, doing work around the house etc). Basically I proved them wrong, showed them I was responsible enough to juggle playing video games with other things, so they had nothing to worry or complain about anymore.
