Not too excited for FFXV (Here's why)

Posted

With FFXV's Demos and playing them, i generally feel lukewarm about it. I like the engine, the story and such but the gameplay just aint my cup of tea.And not to mention with so much coming around and after it, I'd rather get more of early september and october's releases. Yokai Watch 2, Ace Attorney 6 are coming in september and some great stuff in october.

My biggest issue is that the gameplay wants to fast and hectic but tries to balance that by making you slow down with your run being limited and MP draining quick. It also feels clunky with the targeting system and Noctis zipping all over just gets me annoyed as I cant keep up with it.And Nier Automata just looks so better than FFXV, I'm willing to wait for that. I'll watch the movie though, hopefully it isn't spirits within.

HOW DARE YOU NOT BE EXCITED FOR FFXV?!   On a serious note, that's fine. It's only natural that not everybody will like the game.

  • If they weren't called Final Fantasy games, I don't think I'd have as much of an issue as I do now. The new games are so different from the old ones that they don't feel like the same series. I starte

Just to clear some things up: I don't hate and that doesn't don't want to play FFXV, but because i'm hyped for a Spin Off Title doesn't mean i'm not going to play the game or i'm not that excited for the game. Eh... to be honest FFXV was one the two games that make me get into Final Fantasy.

It's cool Mariel lol

you just prefer the spin off which is fine, nothing wrong with that :3

I also like IX, I just haven't played enough of it to give a solid opinion on it. I also couldn't stand VIII so I just put the cut-off point at VII xD

Square definitely is relying on FF a little too heavily. It's their most recognizable brand, sure, but making new IPs wouldn't hurt either, and some of these spin-offs could easily work as something else entirely. It's not like they can't reference FF or have cameos without calling it Final Fantasy, either; other game companies include little references or hidden characters to their franchises in unrelated games, too. The fact that some of the main series titles could easily fit as something entirely different doesn't help much in terms of the overuse of the branding, either.

On the bright side, I Am Setsuna looks like it's going to be the start of some new IPs that go back to some of their older game styles without just slapping the same name on it. They easily could have put Chrono in its name since the combat looks just like Chrono Trigger's, but they're trying something new, and I'm interested to see where that goes.

I want to forget about 8 lol and yeah they're trying this time around so i'll give'em that. and Nier Automata is looking like what I want from a ARPG.

I'll need to see more gameplay for Automata before I make a decision on it, but it does look more fun than FFXV in my opinion.

I saw the Square Enix Presents of the Game the cutscenes are kinda cute, funny and cool also what Lann to the Summons was Priceless.

Anyway FFXV I have not seen any gameplay since the Platinum Demo, i'm not aware of any changes.

I wholeheartedly agree. FFXV is not my cup of tea, but I'm still gonna buy it because $60 to me is nothing and maybe my mind will change.

I just feel that FFXV is slow, and I'm not used to the gameplay.

it depends lol

you not excited for anything else?

and you should try the demos tbh, I sometimes hate buying games that end up picking up dust.

I have my doubts on FFXV either.

I expressed my main issues on it in another thread you made(The amount of time you just travel in the car and boss/magic balance) but there are others issues.

Firstly, that adamantite turtle boss. Not sure if Tabata was joking on it or not(I hope he did),  but a boss taking 15 hours to beat is just ridiculous(

Secondly, combat with kid Noctis felt very slow. With adult Noctis it felt a bit faster, but that fight was against a boss who only straggles against a finisher or the warp strike(which I didn't get as I killed him before that, but I heard about it here). What can I say? If it is just because of kid Noctis, then that's not my fault they made a bad demo.

Thirdly, that targeting system is just annoying. Camera was also annoying at times.

I tried both demos, haha.

I am not excited for a lot of Square games honestly. There's a few, but I'm mainly a KH guy.

A lot of good stuff you're missing out on.

Yeah, that modern setting doesn't go well for me with fantasy. Especially how much realistic they try too make it.

Honestly feels like they just threw the name Final Fantasy there and added some traditional FF monsters.

While I do dig the modern day approach with the aesthetics and town design.........I admit it clashes really hard with the over the top fantastical elements

By that I don't mean the monsters and summons I mean technology.........you mean to tell me they can build this absurdly sized battleships, futuristic magitek armor....etc yet they can't built futuristic Utopias?

And I know someone will bring Final Fantasy VII in the argument but............in that game even with Shinra utilizing Mako energy......aside from few weaponry and technological advancements it doesn't clash as much as it does in XV

I'm not trying to change your opinion on the game or anything, but in regards to your first post about the combat being too fast/hectic I think you should give this video a watch. They've added a feature that is similar to Mass Effect and Dragon Age where you can pause the gameplay mid combat and make moves more carefully. It's not a solution or feature that everyone will jump onto, but I thought I'd share it as nobody seems to have mentioned it in this thread (though forgive me if it was as I skimmed most of the friendly arguing on page 2).

It probably won't change your opinion on the game and like I said I'm not trying to make you buy it, but I thought I'd share the video to give you a glimpse of other options players will have in the combat. This Wait Mode is described to make stratagizing in combat a little easier for people.

I've already got FFXV on pre-order, but I definitely am looking forward to NieR Automata as well! :D

I appreciate you being respectful though that is not what I meant, it wants you to zip around but the game slows you down by having noctis catch his breath and MP draining quickly. I don't think Wait mode would really fix anything, just make things easier. I also checked out the comments, got pissed off by them. and to be honest I cant think of how they can fix it, since they want to make combat like seamless but it just lacks in execution to me.

"Now Turn based fans can shut the firetruck up!"

That was an example of some bigot misunderstanding everything and there's more but I don't have the energy to do so.

I'm still excited to see it, the Fabula Nova Crystallis premise is so different to the steampunk and medieval settings of old FF games that some people find it hard to adjust to. FFXV is the first step in a new direction for the franchise, it's taking a lot of risks. It's difficult for FNC to bring back the old FF feeling since the setting and stories of the FNC games are so different to the old ones imo. I think the combat feels a lot more tactical than anything, from the Platinum Demo I felt that you can't just spam one attack to win.

I think it'll be awesome!

A part of me reckons the combat system will be better executed in the final release. I found it a little hard to get into in both demos, but that was because I wasn't starting the game from the beginning and I didn't really have a say for customising it. It'll be a clean slate in the final release and I remember reading that there will be some type of skill tree for characters so I reckon you'll be able to tweak MP and all that.

I understand the criticisms of the battle system, it was one of the main reasons why I didn't finish Episode Duscae until they updated the demo and fixed it, but I do think elements of the game shouldn't be so harshly judged until the game comes out in September. This goes double for the people who are avoiding the game because "the story isn't good and the main characters are emo" like these aren't valid complaints as the game isn't out. Of course you can say that things just don't appeal to you, you obviously have concerns with the battle system and that is fine, but I do think the turn based crowd you mention are hating the game based on seeing and not playing.

The Wait Mode video I linked wasn't a way of trying to say "now it's just like turn based!!" like the comments say, it was rather me just saying how there are different ways to approach the combat. I do think the Stasis that Noctis can get when his MP drains is absolutely stupid, but my hope is that the more you progress in the game you're MP will increase to the point where Stasis will never be an issue unless you are spamming a lot. That's just me trying to be positive about it all though, I have my worries, but I'll just have to see when the game comes out.

I want to say that but I doubt they can really do much in the span of 3 months. and yeah good to see you think differently.

Exactly, as much as I want more success for Fromsoft and Atlus, I usually make a recommendation for people who want to get into those games from those guys but if they tried it and weren't too into it, then I wont force them, maybe recommend something that could be more their style. But Yeah I support Atlus with my cash because I enjoy them not because they need the money, despite them having a better track record in the recent decade than most companies.

Money is given to those who provide quality to me, not because I just enjoy the brand name.

As much as I really want to see more people play the Megami Tensei franchise I have to keep in mind that it's a niche that might not be for everyone so really the best that I can do is give them a little background on the series, recommend a beginner-friendly title and warn them that it's gonna be hard

TBH Shin Megami Tensei is just bizarre to many around now but I'm sure it'll catch on once it has a big game on a console.  I mean come on, You have a penis riding chariot demon and that's just weird for many and I could see it.

But another note, I'm really looking forward to Persona 5 because from day one Hashino, Soejima and Shoji knew from day one what Persona 5 was. They've envisioned something that basically took five years to make happen and their ideas are probably planned for a Persona 6. The execution and passion is there, the story and music is there, it hits the perfect notes and with P5, just putting together what the old and new fans want, it's almost impossible to just dislike. it's aiming for the top and no doubt it will open the world to SMT and Persona once again.

Well Mara the penis demon isn't even the most bizarre or controversial thing about SMT I mean............you literally kill God(the Judaic one) in the second game

Yes that's common in some JRPGs but none went directly to mention YHVH

I understand that for most JRPGs but SMT has hardly tried to get out of its niche. and the mainline games have spaced around each other in 10 years. though enough SMT koopa , this is a FFXV talk lol

They wouldn't be hated so much if they didn't have the FF brand and yeah I really like 9 and 10 but people like to say that old fans will feel betrayed that FF is in a new direction despite it being better suited for a entire new IP. I'm just tired of them slapping FF on nearly everything they make. And yeah I know square cant escape death three times, I doubt this will kill them if it doesn't do good, but enough projects could put them under, which is saddening to a lot of people. But I hope this could be a wake up call to try new IPs without putting the FF brand on them

If they weren't called Final Fantasy games, I don't think I'd have as much of an issue as I do now. The new games are so different from the old ones that they don't feel like the same series. I started with the first game, and all of the first seven are among my favorite RPGs ever, especially IV-VII. In recent times, they went far away from what made me enjoy those and it doesn't seem like they'll ever go back to the series' roots outside of the occasional smaller title that's not related to FF at all. I have nothing wrong with people enjoying the new games, it's just lost the magic that it used to have in my eyes. Seeing that what was once one of my favorite game series is something I haven't been excited for in ages (Outside of XIV, which had an awful launch and needed to pull in an entirely different team to be fixed) is really disappointing.

There's a difference between sharing your thoughts and telling people what they should or shouldn't do.

I love when games break their conventions to become something bigger and better as time goes one. I mean, take the new Zelda for example. Some may say it is using older ideas from the original titles, but Aonuma is introducing many new things to the series as a whole. Breath of the Wild doesn't even seem close to what Zelda has become over the years and that's an amazing thing. It was the most talked about game, the best game there (even IGN of all things named it best of the show). What's even better are the people who complained that Zelda alone was a bad choice, and after seeing it (even though there were more games) it was as if it was the only game Nintendo needed to many who thought otherwise. FFXV looks great to me because it's breaking its conventions, it's turning into something truly amazing and while many have their opinion on it, I've rarely seen any distaste for FFXV outside of this website. It could be just me, but I'm almost positive the negative opinions about the latest title are in the minority. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing, just thought I'd point it out.

I don't know where you go to see opinions it has been 50/50 with this game. Kh13 is mostly biased towards squares games so I generally start discussions to see how people feel with my other side. I feel its gonna hit a lukewarm sell numbers. I've also seen people trash and it. And my twitter followers generally feel the same. There's even people who hate square entirely. Its generally mixed as again, some would like the game to be a different thing. People even dont see it as final fantasy and have looked to mistwalker, despite them not doing much in awhile.

I mean people see the new Zelda as not a Zelda game. There's always gonna be that. But they're labeled as said titles. Most of the people who dropped the "it doesn't seem like a Final Fantasy" line really only did because their precious Turn-based was taken out for the modern and much better gameplay style of an action game. I still stand by the idea that turn-based is a dying genre. The only game successfully using it at this point is Pokemon and even that gets boring after a few hours. Turn-based games have personally never really caught my interests. Yeah you can get some flash "movies" for a move, but honestly we're much better off actually playing the game rather than watching a bunch of mid-battle cutscenes for a single move.

You may think that but its a genre none the less, it isn't dying but minor and it just needs rework to appeal again like paper Mario or how P5 is doing it and it breaks the mold for tired genres. You can say mmo games are dying or shooters are dying but its whatever, each genres has wear and tear overtime. are you really a Zelda fan? You would know that breath of wind is going more towards its roots and pleade both sides. I'M excited for it since its gonna be more opened ended.

So you question whether I'm a fan of something or not because I don't mention one thing? That's pretty rude in and of itself.

Breath of the Wild isn't just about going back to its roots, and honestly, it barely does that. Yes it's giving us a true open world again, but its breaking conventions that have stuck with the series for years upon years and introducing mechanics that have never been in a Zelda title before, such as cooking and gathering materials to make the meals necessary to replenish hearts. You don't even get hearts from grass anymore. You literally have to find and forage food to heal yourself. There are many things it is doing that make people say "this isn't a Zelda game" but it is. The same goes for games like Final Fantasy XV. You can say it isn't a Final Fantasy game, but it is and that's something people are just gonna have to deal with because it's appearing to be the direction the series is going in now. Modernization is always going to happen, most people won't like it, but even Square Enix knows that real-time action is more appealing today than something turn-based.

Paper Mario isn't even appealing in its current state. Most people hate it and are more excited over the news that if they demand it, Nintendo will give them a HD remaster of Thousand-Year Door.

I've personally never been interested in Persona, so I won't say anything on that.
