Dengeki PlayStation interview with Tetsuya Nomura details Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue

In the latest issue of Dengeki PlayStation, there are two pages worth of details surrounding Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue as well as a new interview with Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura. These details explain the connections between the upcoming titles and previous games in the series, in addition to providing a series timeline.

The translations for the interview and timeline can be found below. Translations for the scans will be coming soon.

Here's a summary of the article, thanks to goldpanner.

Aside from introducing the title, we have an interview with director Tetsuya Nomura. We speak of things such as how the KHχ service is currently making progress which means he can't show you the story as it is, that the release date [for KH2.8] isn't definite yet but it's planned for before the end of 2016, and how with 0.2 they couldn't cram the two chapters into KHBbS as things were hence the 'fragmented' form.

Thanks go to Kayla Copeland ([email protected]) for the interview, scans, and timeline translations.

Tetsuya Nomura Reveals the Truth About [2.8]

Introducing a brand-new HD title that includes completely new material, in preparation for the final battle of the Kingdom Hearts series. We bring you an interview with Director Tetsuya Nomura to tell you more about the next installment, [KH2.8].

-- When were the plans for [KH2.8] set into motion? Could you tell us the aim of exclusively using the PS4 console again?

Nomura: We started thinking about it after completing [KH2.5]. It was about the time that we had finished deciding on the packaging, when we thought “What about a HD version of [KH3D]?” We had been talking about [KHIII], but since [KH3D] is such an essential preface to the story, I thought that, no matter what, I wanted to make an HD version of [KH3D] before [KHIII] was sold. When I was thinking about whether or not to release [KH3D] HD on its own, the time until we could play [KHIII] became shorter--rather than being affected by a change to the [KHIII] engine's initial plans. I knew I wanted everyone to get a taste of the world of [KHIII] as quickly as possible, no matter what. That being said, just like with [KH1.5] and [KH2.5], I thought about how I wanted to package [KH3D]'s essential story with a product that was a part of [KHIII] and its technology. In result, it was inevitable that the console would be the PS4.

-- I'm really excited to play [KH3D] on a non-portable console, but in regards to [KHx], why did you decide to make the story into a theatrical production?

Nomura: [KHx] and [KHUx] are both still running games, and they've still got a lot left to cover. For that reason, our intention is actually not to show the story as it is right now. In [KHx] and [KHUx], from the players' perspective, the story is continuing onward, but in [KhxBC], the story is told from the character of the players' affiliated unions, the Foretellers. Since [KHx] and [KHUx] are online games, there are probably fans that think the hurdles to jump are too high. However, in order to tell the full story of [KH], the Foretellers are very important characters, so I wanted to make sure players encountered the world of [KHx] and [KHUx] some way or another. The Foretellers aren't really characters that can be fit into the timeline somewhere, so we are dedicating their story to a theatrical production.

--Please tell us more about the details and aim of the brand-new supplement based on [BbS], which is different than any of the HD remasters so far.

Nomura: Actually, this was what I worried about the most. We showed this for a bit in the secret episode of [KHBbS FM], but the concept for two chapters of [BbS] is something we've had for a while, and because of problems with time, it's become just a morceau. That concept itself is living on as a setup, so it was our plan to show it at the beginning of [KHIII], but since the volume of material in [KHIII] has increased, I was thinking it was something we just touched on a little. Just as I explained in your previous question, we won't show the whole thing of the initial concept, but we decided to show it ahead of [KHIII] as a short episode.

--Could you please tell us precise release dates, as well as the progress in development at this time?

Nomura: It's not quite time for us to give an exact release date, but we're planning on a release in 2016. As far as production goes, since we're working on it alongside [KHIII], we're using the same technology in some parts, and I can't talk about what current phase we're on.

-- Can you tell us more about what you've had to change for [KH3D], such as going from two screens on the handheld to one on the console, etc.?

Nomura: Since everything in the original was developed with the idea of having two screens, we're having to reproduce everything so that it fits one screen, so it's much different than the other HD releases, as it is more of a “remake.” Since the original design for the 3DS was a lot of fun to play with, in order to keep that same fun while remaking it for the PS4, we're having to cover a lot of ground and make lots of changes. I will have more details in the next interview, so please wait until then.

--Do you have any kind of added elements decided?

Nomura: Unlike [KH1.5] and [KH2.5], we're working with three productions that are not simply a change to HD. As I said before, we're combining [KH3D] into one screen so it's basically a remake, and the other two productions are completely new and both utilize [KHIII] technology--since the density of the original products are so great, we don't really have any big added elements. There will be items to collect that are newly added, like what you saw in [KH1.5] and [KH2.5].

--Will the movie for [KHx BC] be a completely new product?

Nomura: Yes, it's completely new. We're making it with the same technology used in [KHIII], and the characters that appear are all new characters, so the Foretellers and Chirithy will need voices, so we have to work on casting as well as making their models, the scenes...everything will be made from scratch. However, while deciding the scenes, we were writing scenes for the base game [KHx] at the same time, so we inserted some of those scenes into [KHx]. So, the story will be one that players of [KHx] will more easily understand in the timeline.

--Can you tell us what you mean by the title “Back Cover”?

Nomura: Both [KHx] and [KHUx] were made with the concept of a “fairy tale,” so based on the other side we chose the title “Back Cover.” [KHx] and [KHUx] are told from the players' perspective--the front side, so the perspective of the Foretellers is considered the “back side.”

--Could you tell us more about the movie's details and highlights, as well as the amount of content?

Nomura: People currently playing [KHx] and [KHUx] already know this, but we have not really seen much of the Foretellers as individuals outside of each of their organizations. In this production, we hope to make clear the thoughts of each Foretellers, as well as why they formed their unions, and I think what they'll have to say will be very interesting. As far as the content volume goes, since this won't be the length of a full game, I can only tell you that it will be in the format of a short story.

--Will Aqua be the main character in the realm of darkness for [KH0.2BbS]? Also, will the story be about what's happened in the ten years that have passed? (As in, the period of time before the BbS secret episode, where she met Ansem the Wise?)

Nomura: That's right. Aqua is the main character, so the story will follow Aqua through the realm of darkness. However, the flow of time in the realm of darkness is different, so it's not simply ten years that have passed. The beginning of the story is after the secret episode in [KHBbS FM], but the story's ending is the finale, so I can't talk about it. Actually, we prefaced to it in the secret episode, but in the opening, just before the new journey in [KHIII], we'll tell you about King Mickey meeting Aqua again, who has been hidden away all this time...it will be that kind of introduction.

--As far as gameplay goes, how has the system and action changed? Please tell us about this along with the content volume.

Nomura: It is similar to the flow of [KHBbS], but we plan to include a portion that resembles [KHIII]. For details, please wait until the next information release. As far as volume content goes, this short story will be about the length of one world in the usual KH series. We want to give the players something they'll be satisfied with by letting them experience [KHIII] gameplay in a sample size.

--Can you tell us about the meaning of [0.2]'s title, “Fragmentary Passage?

Nomura: As far as content goes, we can't include a full volume of content to play with like the second chapter of [KHBbS], so it's just a “fragment,” and we left that part of the subtitle. [0.5] is one of the letters and numbers that appeared in the secret episode of [KHBbS FM], and that meant full volume, so we decided on [0.2] this time, to indicate that there will be more content to come. However, the remaining passage will be told in [KHIII], so we wanted to show that this production is closely related to [KHIII].

-- Finally, [KH2.8] will be an extremely important bridge title to [KHIII], won't it? Can you tell us about any noteworthy points in that connection?

Nomura: For [KH1.5] and [KH2.5], we added the word [ReMIX] to the title, but for [KH2.8] we're adding [Final Chapter Prologue]. This is not to say that this is the final chapter in the KH series, but it does mean that [KH2.8] will continue to pull the curtain closed on the story of the Dark Seeker. As I stated earlier, the content serves as a preface to [KHIII], starting with the HD [KH3D], and [KHUxBC] will also be very important to the KH series. I mentioned this in a previous answer, but [KH0.2BbS] is closely related to [KHIII]. It's definitely no mistake to say that the three productions packaged in [KH2.8] are all in preparation for [KHIII].

Now, through Aqua’s eyes, the things she experienced….

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep: A fragmentary passage

A brand-new production entailing Aqua’s fight through the realm of darkness.

Compilation Production II

The last thing we saw in [KH BbS] was Aqua’s descent into darkness, but after that, what happened to her? And, in [KHIII], where will she be connected…? Right after [KH BbS] in the timeline comes a brand-new production with Aqua as the protagonist, and the insertion above is the first look at this movie. What kind of development is awaiting us?

What is [Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep]?

Released for the PSP in January of 2010, then an additional secret episode in January of 2011 in [KH BbS Final Mix]. It has already been remastered into HD and was released in October of 2014 and was included in [KH HD 2.5 ReMIX]. The story takes place before Sora became a Keyblade wielder. Terra, Aqua, and Ventus serve as the three protagonists who are involved in a horrible fight after the disappearance of Master Xehanort. Before playing the newest installment, it’s best to make sure you understand the details of the story up until this point.

Check out the conclusions of the three sets of stories and scenes!

< ^ The scenes for each protagonist are different, and one event is seen through three different perspectives--be sure to check out what kind of destiny awaits these three characters!

VENTUS

A boy who trains under Master Eraqus alongside Terra and Aqua. He has a curious personality, and is always ready for an adventure.

AQUA

A young woman who is serious and has a cool atmosphere to her. Just like the other two, she is training to become a Keyblade Master.

Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover

Compilation Production III

The oldest tale of the series will be released as an all-new HD theatrical production

The oldest story on the timeline, [KH x (chi)], will be receiving a theatrical production of its “back cover”! It took place more than 100 years before Sora received his Keyblade--what kind of world was it back then…? Will the origins of the keyblade be made clear?

All of the worlds were completely connected.

The Master of Masters possessed a way to see the future.

He grieved over this coming future, and so he appointed five of his six apprentices as Foretellers who would record the future.

They gathered Keyblade wielders like you

and by defeating the Heartless, monster of darkness, they began to gather the “light.”

What are [Kingdom Hearts X] and [Kingdom Hearts Unchained X]?

[KHx] was released as a PC browser game in July of 2013. In September of 2015, that world expanded into a smartphone app known as [KH Unchained X]! It’s currently quite a hit. The gameplay is based on clearing stages, and its specialty is easy, refreshing battles that you can have fun with. Those highlights will be introduced on the smartphone screen.

The story’s protagonists are the players themselves

You can customize your avatar

The story’s protagonist is the player, and you can create your own avatar. In addition, there are costumes and decor and more that you can freely choose parts from and further customize.

Go out on an adventure with Chirithy

Chirithy is your cat-like guide who travels with each player on their adventure.

Every so often he shows you the way, or tests you, and he watches over your growth. It’s not clear what he is, but maybe he’s quite important…?

^ He seems to know quite a bit about the worlds. Continue through your adventure while taking heed of his actions and words.

Familiar characters appear throughout the worlds

[KH X] begins in the original world appearing for the first time in this game, Daybreak Town, then continues on to various worlds such as Wonderland, Olympus Coliseum, Agrabah, and so on. You can converse with the characters and free them from their turmoil.

^ During the adventure, if you add character medals to your deck, you can borrow their strength and fight back with their abilities. They’ll make you stronger!

< Something’s up right away! Let’s defeat each and every last Heartless.

Last, but not least, here is the series timeline found at the bottom of the article:

Check out the three new productions appearing in [2.8] that connect the series!

Here we introduce the series productions so far, known as the [Dark Seeker] chronicles. Check out where the three new productions in [2.8] are placed in the series.

Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover

The oldest tale in the series. Explains the happenings of the world over 100 years before Sora received his Keyblade.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

The first version of the events of 10 years before Kingdom Hearts. It is the beginning of Terra, Ventus, and Aqua’s journey.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep: -A fragmentary passage-

A production created after [KHBbS]. Aqua, who is trapped in the realm of darkness, serves as the main character to this tale. Will the countless mysteries of the realm of darkness finally become clear in this story…?

(leads into [KHIII])

Kingdom Hearts

The first production in the series. The chosen hero of the Keyblade, Sora, goes on a journey to find his friends.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories

A production about the adventures in Castle Oblivion. Sora’s fight with Organization XIII begins here.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Roxas, a member of Organization XIII, serves as the protagonist, and the story reveals how he spent his time in the organization.

Kingdom Hearts II

A year after the first game, an older Sora again travels to various worlds and fights again Organization XIII.

Kingdom Hearts Coded

A story about a data world created from Jiminy’s Journal. Data Sora goes on a quest to solve the mystery behind the message left in the Journal.

Kingdom Hearts 3D HD

Sora, who has defeated Organization XIII, and Riku begin their Mark of Mastery exams. They travel to seven worlds of sleep to unlock their seven keyholes.

Kingdom Hearts III

The last chapter of the series regarding Xehanort’s wishes, the [Dark Seeker] chronicles. Sora will go out on a new journey, and a great battle between light and darkness will occur.

Yep it doesn't make sense bc if they met she should've told Mickey about what happened to Terra. He was already searching for his fate anyways and as said by Mickey himself Terra was the only one left they needed to find.

Precisely. So, the only choice that Nomura has is for Aqua to not tell Mickey about Terra. But this doesn't make sense whatsoever, since it would obviously be one of the first things she would tell him in a reunion.

one other thing that came in my mind is that if she met mickey wouldn't she know that the worlds were in danger? then why act so surprised when she met ansem the wise?

Mickey would've and should've told her that though.( it was why he was down there to retrieve the KKD) They had a lot of things that were vital info to share. Don't forget all these retcons and writing things as Nomura goes catches up to him eventually and I hope he has a better explanation than he has for other things he has poorly handled like when he retconned the Xblade being 1 pure light and 1 pure dark to 7 and 13. Retcons leave holes sometimes.

and here I was thinking a couple of years ago that KH is like the perfect game with zero retcons and plotholes :/ dreams shattered

I mean I thought that KHx took place thousands of years back in the past. What do you guys think?

This was mentioned in...last week's Famitsu interview, I think. Yeah, 100 years is a suspiciously short time period, considering the "age of fairy tales" thing, but it's entirely possible the Keyblade War's catastrophic events caused some sort of memory-fuzzing, whether by accident or on purpose (to prevent something similar from happening again?).

Man, this is just awesome!  2.8 is building up to be quite the lead up into Kingdom Hearts III, and it's going to be fan-flipping-tastic!  I can't wait to get my taste of the game already! And the fact that X Back Cover will also be running on KHIII's engine means that it's going to look so amazing! X_X Gahh, and KH3D HD! I'm so happy!!!!  AND A FRAGMENTARY PASSAGE!  SO MUCH HYPE!

And guys, what are you all panicking for?  Nomura clearly stated he intends for the game to release in 2016, before said year ends.  So, the way I see it, this could go the way of 2.5 when it released!  It released on October for Japan and on December for the rest of the world!  I'm confident that 2.8 will follow suit with the same kind of release date strategy!

Unless, of course, they aim for an international release...that'd be pretty sweet. X_X

I have a serious concern about the translation! BC should be "more than 100 years ago", not exactly "100 years ago". The timeline reference to back cover has a "以上" which means "or more", while the timeline reference to BBS does NOT, as it's exactly 10 years.

It's a pretty big difference between "100 years ago" and "more than 100 years ago"!

BC's [...100年以上前の...] vs BBS's [...10年前の...]

Yeah, there should also be another "0" in there somewhere because Master Xehanort is like 70 or 80 from the way he looks in BbS.

Well that makes more sense, although when people say "over X years ago" or "more than X years ago", they do usually mean somewhere within that time period, relatively speaking.

It does mean he left her there. Whether he had no choice is another story. But still why say nothing? Why keep it a secret? Bigger question why didn't she tell Mickey what happened to Terra since he's the only one they were still figuring out???

Well we could have another retcon on our hands, or maybe just another promise Mickey had to keep. Also maybe she forgot about stuff like Ansem the Wise did. Which doesn't really explain how she knew about Terra and Ven when she met him. Oh well.

She didn't know? After all, the last thing she "knew" was that she saved him... kinda. There will be funny times of joy when she hears about him.

Edit:

Plus, what if Mickey only saw her but couldn't reach her? To me it seemed like Aqua never met anyone besides Ansem.

Great interview. Can't wait to see more of this KH3 technology. Its time to say farewell to the old school and step on new ground.

2002-2015 RIP Old style. It's been a trip!

I'm gonna miss them fish faces. Nothing screams Kingdom Hearts quite like fish faces.

But Mickey did not know Terra's fate still since Terra "disappeared" and she didn't know for sure if Terra was even ok?? As for Mickey that doesn't seem to be what's implied in the interview but we shall see. It seems they had interactions. Why leave her choice or no choice? Thing is, if he had no choice why keep it a secret? Can't wait for this to release.

Well regardless I'm just hoping it's handled well so it's not a "wtf" lol. I love the story too much

There has to be a reason why Aqua is still in the RoD, if Mickey saw her again. There has to be some kind of explanation.
