What if he was actually a good guy? Xehanort thought that unlocking all the worlds secrets and understanding just how the worlds was made through conflict. Believing that the world was made from the great darkness of the war, Xehanort believed that another war would be the perfect way to recreate the universe into a more ideal one. Him believing so made him fall into darkness. But, what if he was secretly channelling it similar to Riku? We don't know much of Xehanort plans. We know that he wants to create a organisation with his heart implanted into theirs. But what if it's much more than that? Xehanort just wants to see the outcome of the world, after the recreation of the war. So, he was forced to a new vessel. Not doing so will make him die before the outcome. He tried Ventus, but he was weak and become use for the X blade. (Which he needed to recreate the war.) He tried Terra, which it worked. (He was forced because Terra was the only one capable to be his vessel at that time.) I believie secretly that Xehanort just wanted to see the outcome of the war. Nothing else.
