I can see why it could be redundant though. Just a thought!  

I tend to view adding a person as your friend is sort of equivalent to a like on their profile. I could see people liking statuses, but not really profiles, in my opinion.

There is really no point to that in all honesty.

I don't think it's needed tbh, if you want to say you like their profile then you can just post on their profile

Eh, I don't think there's much point to it. Better to just have the illusion that either everybody likes you or doesn't care enough to dislike you than to have a counter indicating how little likes you have for just being on the site. We already have a Facebook page for that. X)"

Yeah I've got to go with the majority here, I don't really think it's needed for profiles. I can see it being done for statuses, but I think if you like someone's profile you should just tell them. I'm sure most would appreciate that you took the time to write a kind compliment for them over just slapping a like button.
