I can agree with you. While the original Super Mario Bros. is a good classic. There are other Mario games that have surpassed it such as Super Mario World, Mario bros 3, ect. But it is still interesting to see it be #1 in Japan.

I'll tell you how your experience will be;

 

You go in thinking it's about "assets" and robots and androids and explosions. You run and think "hey, this combat is great. These robots are really weird. These villains are super painfully obviously expository." That's up until about ending B.

 

Then from Route C, Yoko Taro hits you with a sledgehammer. You're on the amusement park of feels. And the ride doesn't stop - not until you decide to

 

Delete ALL your save data... For the Glory of Mankind!

 

 

Both BotW and NieR deserve Game of the Year right now. The latter is just extremely lesser known.

I don't think platformers really count... I mean, they chose some great platformers, but they're weird choices.

 

BotW being up so high is absolutely deserved, though, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

You know, it's ironic that Kingdom Hearts is on the 7th spot and Kingdom Hearts II is on the 12th spot! Just a bit more, and the X-Blade would've been forged on this list!

 

Quite curious that Super Mario Bros. is on the number 1 spot! To think that such an old game still holds such a high prestiged spot is pretty awesome!
