Music,Architecture,history and ESPECIALLY Townspeople

the last one being something recent KH games have been severely lacking in.......from KH2's Aladdin mentioning "the action, the people" WHEN NO ONE IS IN AGRABAH or the laughable Ballroom scene from Birth by Sleep

All of the above actually...settings in games that can pull all of that are the really great ones

Clearly they're invisible.

I don't think you can break this down into a single aspect. A good town (or any video game location, really) is made great thanks to a number of factors all working together.

Yeah That is obvious

I'm just pointing out the one aspect that KH severely lacked which seems to be fixed in KH3 cuz the trailers showed lots of NPCs for places like the Tangle world

Even if a lot of them are background NPCs you can't talk to it still helps make the world alive and makes it matter all the more when we save those worlds from the heartless

If you make a big town in your game,it needs landmarks, interesting stuff in it that people will remember like a statue or whatever. If it's not memorable then people will get lost in it and not knowing where you are and where you're going is pretty bad. Sonic 06 is the 1st exemple that comes to mind when it comes to bad town design

Probably one of the things I'm looking forward to the most is the Townspeople that are coming to Kingdom Hearts 3. It could get really awkward in past games when they mention the people AND THERE IS NOBODY THERE!

agree those 4 things to be define a city. Traverse town with its  warm and calming lights, ogrimmar with its war drums! gondor with its pure white stone and huge walls and towers a city is like person with different traits
