My head canon was that he had a crush on her in KH1

Sora and Riku both try to save Kairi in KH1.
Sora by traveling through the worlds with Donald and Goofy.

And Riku by giving into the darkness, getting control of the heartless, and then it changed from trying to save Kairi to trying to outdo Sora.
