Like he started as a scientist who basically loved darkness so much he wanted to marry the stuff. But then he loses and Riku begins his resistance of ansem power, which he conquers completely in 3D. Ansem is so impressed with riku's ability to overcome the darkness in his heart that it makes him reflect on his love for it and eventually lose interest in the darkness which is where we see him in KH3. With his last words he tells them to see what else life has to offer, because to him, he knew the darkness was not something worth seeking anymore.
