Originally, Terra-Xehanort was Terra's heart and Xehanort's heart fighting for supremacy; Terra's heart went back and forth between "Terra's body" and "the monster behind Terra-Xehanort". Terra's body reformed when Ansem and Xemnas were felled, but the heart of Terra was caught by the "monster behind" and the body was made into a vessel of Xehanort again.
