I would say the story didn't slap itself in the face until 3D

But either way, it's definitely not true that people are complaining about too much story

imo kh2 introduced a lot of characters and did nothing with them, which made them basically pointless. bbs poorly explained the story of Ventus, Xehanort and Eraqus, DDD was a completely mess and KH3 did the same thing as KH2 in terms of introducing stories and characters and doesn't explain them. Also the first half of keyblade graveyard was poor imo
