Yes and no.. it really depends on publisher

Sometimes DLC is just comestics.. sometimes its an "episode" but big enough that it might as well be an expansion(Looking at you, shovel knight, with your character DLCs that might as well be a full game).. sometimes you just a slow drip of new content over patches and DLC, also, like Bloodstained or many other indie titles.. sometimes you truly just get expansions outright, sometimes one or two, even

FFXV is certainly not the catch-all standard.. FFXV was just an unfortunate, decade long mess where the game had to come out already and they were basically trying to put the content back and even add entirely new content that wasn't thought of (Like Adyrn, new story, and much of the canceled content)

But, if you want a good idea of how western AAA developement looks like(completely overlooking any and all titles not assiociated with the AAA industry) at the very least, look no further than how EA and Ubisoft and 2K and Bethesda handle their games.

With the slight exceptions, like CDProject

Well Namine is a part of Kairi, and she was made from Soras heart. Namine in a way can communicate to Sora through his heart probably.
