Back then, games used to focus on graphics, but because the technology wasn't there yet to have pog realistic graphs, they didn't focus excessively on graphics to the point where it started affecting the performance of the games. Neither did they spend an unordinate amount of effort and time in them

So yes, it's always about the eye candy, but now it seems like the ey candy has become the focus, where they focus on that first and gameplay second

Of course, yes, and that's true for games a lot lately.. But theren's little use I think in pretending "devs were smarter and better before and they weren't about graphics before"

In an age where graphics are already bloody great, it takes a huge amount of effort and time to make them stand out

I don't think anyone's saying devs are less talented

devs are nowadays way better the problem is they don't have time to develop good games

Maybe not that no, but I always see "Remember when games werne't about graphics", even though.. that idea kinda has been there for a long time, with both Nintendo and Sega's marketing pushing that idea

Dreamcast was probably the last console to bang on about "bits" as a selling point

To be fair, I don't think devs are "less talented". It's an issue of priority, where the publishers want the developers to focus on graphics above all else because that's what sells, even though the effort required to have great graphics today far outweighs the effort of years ago

Let's take Hellblade as an example. Realistic look, but it's goal was to make you feel like someone who can hear people's voices in yoiur head which it accomplished

Was it even 128-bit? Who cares

Or God of War, the new one, that made the whole game in just one-shot

Sega's "Genesis does what Nintendon't" in regards to the 32 bit of the Genesis and how games had more colors and the like on it.. and the n64 being like "Our chipset that can allow for 64-bit, which will give you the best graphics yet!"
