From what I understand, and i could be wrong, when it originated, 80's-ish, 70's-ish, the idea was a guy who took care of himself in certain ways.

Fashion sense, cool, manicures; stuff like that. The type of men they were referring to were (they assumed) heterosexual, but the idea was, cause this was 50+ years ago
