You can block the attacks where he constantly warps at you, and a couple of dodge rolls usually helps with the lightning
But ye, I mostly played aggressively too

I can block those but then I just get hit by red lightning and thrown into a mine and then combo'd to oblivion

way to dodge it is to block roll forward block roll forward until he puts the circle thingies around you then you need to dodge to the right and in the end you just spam dodge to avoid the ground red attacks, or if you want you can also block into reprisal dash and airstep back
