Newer cartridges can't fit in the older systems but the old ones fit in the newer systems.

I hope Switch 2 can be played undocked

it's not like they haven't done that before, though. until nso, all games that were initially available on previous consoles couldn't be played on the switch (also not counting the games where a switch version was made but you had to buy it even if you already had the previous game)

Nintendo Switch is a demonstration of them neglecting to add or intentionally excluding BC for physical games, so players would have to buy them again if they wanted them on that console.
