It was chasing a 2015 era mobile game trend

Before botw came out which caused the domino effect of genshin the gacha botw clone

Like we now have this just announced today as well

This is even using the same time period inspirations as missing link but with the trends that are popular now

Missing Link was not going to be able to compete at all

The higher ups should have realised that sooner instead of dragging it out, but from what I know of JP corporate culture, they were probably being stubborn old men about it until they were forced to accept it was a waste of money and time
