FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS THREAD IS NOT MADE TO OFFEND ANY RELIGIOUS PEOPLE. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT, BUT WITH ALL RESPECT TO ALL RELIGIONS AND PEOPLE'S BELIEFS.

I've been thinking lately about many things, but one main thing I've thought about is religion.

People often ask me; What religion do I belong to? Answer: I belong to my own beliefs.

What I mean with that is that I have "my own religion". Nothing to do with god, bible, or any other religion. What I believe on won't be mentioned.

So I think: What is a religion? In my opinion, A group of beliefs, myths, legends, and rituals, "created" by other people. Yes, and why do people follow religions?

Simple. Yet no so much.

Most people don't think like me, they don't have their own beliefs. SO they just follow what the church says, per example.

Or maybe that's not it. I surely can't understand.

Or maybe it's something else? Maybe they're just too lazy to have their own beliefs. They have their reasons. You have your reasons.

I just think people should have their own beliefs(PLEASE REMEMBER, I AM IN NO WAY TRYING TO INFLUENCE PEOPLE INTO CHANGING UNLESS THEY WANT TO.), beliefs thought of due to their experience, to their own selves. Not what some people thought of a ling time ago. Not follow someone else's "orders" and "rules".

So can the religious people of the site, please help me understand why do people follow religions?

tru i believe in god but there r some things i dont think r tru in the bible like if ur gay/bisexual/lesbain ur going to to hell and the reason i dont believe that is one bible was created by men not god and second ur going to hell because u like something? i think that just f***ed up!

Well depends on the person, Some people follow diffrent religions thinking they are automaticly saved by god, others join them as a way to live life, others just join them because a friend or someone wanted them to, While some auctually believe in there religion, Sooo many reasons as to why people are a religion or not or follow there own thing, My self I have been raised by my parents into being a jehovahs witness, and I have a firm fath in it to. But It all depends on the person as to why they are a certain religion.

We follow religions because we like knowing that there is something coming after earth and to help us enjoy the time we spend on earth and help improve it. Which religion is correct is disputable, but for 2 billion other people in the world that believe like I do, we know that Christianity is the religion that is correct. Some don't believe that, but if you believe that God is out there and Jesus is Christ, you have what many people these days lack. Hope. I'm not gonna go too much into detail, but that's pretty much it. Sorry if that sounded preachy.

There are people that believe in everything a certain religion teaches, so of course, they follow it.

I don't believe that there's one "correct" religion, or at least I don't think anyone will know if there is until they die. (did that even make sense? lol)

Either way, people turn to religion for all kinds of reasons. It depends on who you ask.

People follow religions because they like what they have to say and they are convincing.

Take Christianity for example, it encourages love and peace while having strong core values and support for others. It is also very family oriented. Along with you're traditional stories that teach people values.

There is also some pretty interesting evidence supporting Christianity, the Roman records of Jesus' execution exist, there is evidence of a great flood, lots of ancient villages were found submerged underneath the Mediterranean dating back to around the time the great flood was believed to have happened, and there are recordings, not in the bible or by Christians of Jesus' return from death.

There is other evidence for other religions too, everyone knows Buddha actually existed and the Hindus have their own set of things.

If you want to learn more, just go to the Church, Mosque, or other religious center of something that interest you. Attend one service (it's only an hour or two) and talk to some of the priest of whatever they have. You might learn something and maybe even take an interest in the religion, which can't hurt you. Just don't try out Scientology...

This is the most distorted view of a religion I've seen in a while. If you actually read the bible or attend church once or twice you would know that this is far from the truth.

Christianity doesn't sate that doing this/that results in going to hell. This isn't the 1300s. They got over the whole homophobic thing decades ago and no matter what you do you can still be saved. If I were to kill everyone I knew but in my last moments, felt sincerely sorry and the whole 9 yards I wouldn't go to hell.

Also the Bible was written by man after having divine inspiration. AKA God told them to. Stop spreading lies.

People follow religions because they want assurances and answers. "Why are we here? What are we suppose to do?" are questions that some religions answer. I'm a Christian. I believe in God. Why? Because I want answers and assurances. I want to know that there is a big plan to everything that happens. I want to be assured that my life is not an accident, not some random atoms that stuck together. Like CrownKeeper13 said, Christianity gives people Hope. I can't speak for other religions, but I'd imagine members of other faiths draw hope from their religion. It's nice to know there is something bigger and better happening then just my little life.

Well, hope that was helpful.

I think Kinode believes in cats.

All of us have different religion but we mostly talk about the same thing. Its just a few different beliefs.

I guess people have religions because it helps them to be uhh, good? (idk how to say it orz)

I think Christianity is a pretty religion :> But I'm going to remain as a Buddhist for my whole life haha

Well I'm not really knowledge-able about religious stuffs but I think religions help you to be a better person.
