Is grammar THAT big of a deal on this website?

Posted

I just read a forum and people were criticizing him/her left and right about his grammar. They weren't even really answering his question.

i mene i gt tht if u rite lyke ths its rly hard 2 undrstand.

But it wasn't bad at all. I mean as long as you can understand what you're reading that should be good enough, right?

RIGHT!! god i'm so sick of ppl geting mad over grammer >..>

Well, generally speaking, no. Grammar is not too big a deal, but is a problem for people who want to read clearly. That's why there's grammar criticism on this site. I wouldn't want to read stuff like

u tipe weth gramer lyke dis u cewl

I would rather read things like the post I'm typing right now, but no, it's not that big of a deal, it's just that people want to read posts, not look at a jumble of nonsensical letters.

In other words:

Bad grammar is fine, but not wanted by some people. Just be sure to use good grammar later in real life, per se, get a job?

Yeah. I can read it so I don't mind. But if it isn't even readable then don't even bother posting it. I can also understand if they can't spell something or are not english.

I like good grammar, but ones bad grammar shouldnt distract the reader from a serrious question unless said person is unreadable.

how did i know koko was gonna add something here...

Well, it is a rule on the site to type with the best grammar you can.

Try your best to type properly. It's okay if you make a couple of mistakes here and there, but don't type badly on purpose.

Your grammar isn't going to be perfect, heck mine isn't perfect. But we prefer it if you type the best you can so we can understand what you're trying to say. If you're typing badly on purpose, because you don't care about grammar or spelling, then yeah people are going to get mad/frustrated at you.

owww im hurt i don't talk much but you always invite me to chat rooms

Personally I don't care because I can read bad grammar and good grammar from reading messy sentences from my sister.

You are using a keyboard. Therefore, it has takes a tenth of a second to put a period at the end of a sentence, and if you do, you just made your post that much easier to read for the people who are about to read it. I get that you're too lazy to move your finger 3 inches just to spell a word correctly so I know what you're saying, but I'm too lazy to read your post if I have to spend 25 minutes trying to figure out if you just said "I just ate a slice of pie." or "I just mated with a slice of pie.", because that's greatly going to affect my reply. If you said you ate a slice of pie, I'm probably going to call you a noob and tell you to shut up about pie, but if it was the latter, I'm probably going to tell you to seek help.

i meant cause you always correct my grammar but what you said too

Thats funny because when im in a chating with her, she always correct my miss- spelling her or -Ventus- would correct me all the time. Its embarassing. plus, she even corrects herself. Grammar freak

Yep.

It's in the rules for one thing. And I'm not much of a rule-freak, but I do find it very annoying when someone doesn't use proper grammar or spelling. I especially hate it when they're older than me and they do it because they're lazy and don't feel like moving their fingers a few inches away from each other to type a damn word.

I can deal with a few commas missing, or a lack of question marks here and there...

But when you totally f*** up what you were trying to say so that it looks like

lol y iz grmr so imprtent i dont even ned it im 2 gud for propr spelin

...then I have a problem.

She's annoyed with the way some people spell and use grammar and I don't blame her. Correcting your spelling should not at all be embarrassing.

And when people correct themselves, they're acknowledging that they made a mistake and actually want to make an effort to fix it.

You also spelled 'embarrassing', 'misspelling' and 'chatting' wrong.

I feel like bad grammar is a different language. I don't know, maybe that's just me.

i hear that

I feel like bad grammar is a different language. I don't know, maybe that's just me (probably just me).

I think it is too. I've noticed that people who type with bad grammar are better at understanding it (Which is probably why they think it's so unimportant if they can understand it just fine), which makes it a lot like another language.

I dont care much about grammar because main isnt good (thats also because english is just my second langue) and i dont care about it before i cant say what he/she wroted.

Wow this sucks. I mean Im not using a computer, or a keyboard. so this takes long to post alot

I do not believe that has anything to do with the quality of your grammar and spelling.

Yeah it does. because what im using doesn't have spell check and plus I cant tell if im did a mistake sometimes, or a glich appears on my typing

Don't disregard grammar. Don't desperately cling to any and every concept that can take away any scrap of legitimacy. Don't cling to an idea that can only be viewed as a desperate gambit to keep your own intelligence at an all time low. if you can't be bothered to try and write and talk correctly, you have no real right to be talking and writing at all.
