Is a price drop imminent?

It's old news now that PlayStation Vita isn't selling very well in its native Japan. As we already reported, Vita is off to a rocky start, only selling 72,479 in its first week on the market after pushing about 325,000 in its first 48 hours.

This precipitous decline hasn't gone unnoticed in circles outside of the gaming realm. In fact, Forbes tech contributor Tero Kuittinen has written a scathing article titled "Sony in Big Trouble with PS Vita," outlining the problems the company is currently facing with Vita.

Kuittinen notes that Vita's "second week brought devastation," especially when compared to Nintendo 3DS' second week on the market. Nintendo 3DS was widely believed to have had a terrible start, only more recently pushing bigger numbers now that games players want have finally starting arriving. Yet, 3DS sold 370,000 units in Japan in its first week, and 210,000 units in its second. In other words, it beat PlayStation Vita by 45,000 units in its first week, and a massive 137,500 units in its second week.

"That drop off led to steep further sales erosion," the Forbes article notes, "which forced Nintendo to implement an unusually early and steep price cut." This, of course, begs the question if Sony will do the same. Tero Kuittinen thinks that it will. "Sony will likely be forced to cut the price of the PS Vita from 24,000 Yen (~$311) to well below 20,000 Yen (~$259) very soon."

But the problems don't stop there. Kuittinen continues, "The upcoming US launch could be a true debacle for several reasons. Sony has decided to price Vita at $250, higher than the Amazon Kindle Fire. The hottest games like the latest Uncharted are priced at $50, while many other major titles are $40. The pricing seems delusional in light of the Japanese response to the PS Vita."

However, Kuittinen saves perhaps his harshest words for later in his article. "The 3DS should have been a surefire blockbuster in its domestic market -- the summer softness in Japan may have been an early warning sign of the coming global portable market malaise. The disastrous second week of the PS Vita is the second sign." The reason? The Forbes author argues that the rise of the smart phone and tablet markets are much to blame.

But he also argues that Sony should be concerned, as it seems to be on recent word that Sony had no comment when asked about Vita's sluggish sales. "…the portable console market may now have entered an age of permanent, slowly accelerating decline," Kuittinen concludes. "The true test of the industry is the United States, where consumers are embracing games designed for smartphones and tablets. The possible shrinking of the portable game consumer base would hit the runner-up Sony before Nintendo really gets mauled. The rot sets in first at the periphery."

Dude, learn to make proper sentences. I can barely make out what you're saying. Anyway, they are making phones with a Playstation platform. They've been making phones with games for years to come, haven't seen anything yet. Google and Apple are the only companies killing the industry.

Sorry if you didn't understand me, I'm not speak perfect English because I'm not English u.u

The vita is seriously doing terrible in terms of sales and software. I mean just look, there are about...what... 4 good games out for the Vita? I know that's pretty decent but it still needs a lot more games and 3rd party support in order for it to sell really well and become both a success and a rival for the 3DS. I am talking about games like Final Fantasy (which is pretty obvious that Square will put some new FF titles. They have made new FF games for pretty much every console that have existed), more Assassin's Creed, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and maybe a new Kingdom Hearts game just so that it could help boost sales. Oh, and maybe put some good JRPG's in there too that are NOT Japan exclusive like. Have JRPG's that will not only help the Japanese market, but the Western market as well (like the Tales Of games). That way everyone can experience the game and not just one race. This is why Vita is doing so bad ESPECIALLY in the west. Lack of good JRPG's that Japan keeps exclusive and don't even bother giving other countries a chance to play them because they fear that their games won't sell as well in other territories.

Now as for the memory cards, Sony really needs to just drop the price for it. Don't just do a price drop on the Vita, put a price drop on the memory cards as well so that people can buy both a Vita and memory card for a better price deal. Memory card should not be that expensive to buy. They should be about maybe $12.00. That seems like a reasonable price to me. If the Vita didn't have expensive memory card then maybe...just maybe the Vita would have done better. Now let't talk about the advertising. Sony's advertising for the Vita is very poor. You barely see any good ads that will make you want a Vita. Sony should do better with advertising. I'm talking about ads that make you want to instantly buy a Vita.

Now, if Sony can do all of this. The Vita could sell so much better than it has now.

Persona 4: The golden is sure to make the Vita's sales boost. It made the sales boost alot for Japan.

No it doesn't

You know theres a problem with the Vita when Monster Hunter isn't being developed on it.

Actually I might buy a vita just for it. It took my until this year just to get a normal, PSP, too. Even with BBS and Dissidia out there.

I really recommend it. Persona 4 on the PS2 is one of my favourite games of all time. This isn't just any ordinary JRPG.

Material goods are very cheap to make. If costs 12 dollars to make a memory card, then it costs more to make a memory card than ti does to make a game disk and packaging.

Know why? Because while a game COSTS 60 dollars, it is sold to a retailer for much less. The same applies to memory cards, and indeed ALL products

That's how profit is made

Memory cards are very cheap to make.

Stop assuming I don't know something just because I knew something else

You have good points on this, I agree that memory cards are over priced, but what comes to games it's all about opnion:

For me there is already many games that make me want to buy Vita and it seriously have more good games than 4. Too bad that there won't be monster hunter for Vita, one of my favourite games on PSP, but there will probably be new God Eater game for Vita which is basicly same game as monster hunter, but more in anime style.

Also, that upcoming Soul Sacrifice from creator of megaman looks pretty darn awesome game. Tales of game would be pretty nice on Vita as you mentioned.

Same reason the PS3 didn't do well. Overpriced with no games. Hopefully, the lesson will be learned in good time.

The Vita is only going through the PS3 era phase. No need to get all worried. Good games are coming your way. Soul sacrifice seems to be a Monster Hunter clone but it has some exclusive features for it. Muramasa the demon blade is coming as well.

2 good games that I can really recommend for this month's release are DJ Max Technika which I'm enjoying it immensely and Ragnarok Odyssey for some awesome multiplayer with lotsa content to discover.

It needs to be a whole hell of a lot cheaper. And then it needs games.

Including the memory card, it costs as much as a Wii U. I'd rather have a Wii U.

I'm planning on getting a vita instead of a ps3 when I depart for college but I have one question. I want the Jak and Daxter collection for the ps3 but then again I saw they have each seperate game available for download on the PsN. If I had the vita could I download the three HD ps3 games on the vita and play it on it? Ive heard it was like a ps3 on the go.

I suggest you get a PS3 because if you're going to be in college and not really on the go, a stationary system would be the best choice, considering the games you want as well.

My experience is that you can't even access the internet on handheld consoles, but you can hook up a PS3 to go online.  You might want to think about that if you're going to live in the dorms.
