I came across several sources on the internet about the Coat and one interesting point is that it's been likened to Vanitas' appearance before Ven connected with Sora (it never appeared in BBS, I know, so I'm assuming Nomura has talked about this at some point). Considering the Coat is a nightmare from Sora's dreams and that Ven's heart is still within Sora, could it be possible that the Coat is some form of Vanitas? I feel it'd weird that Vanitas would appear briefly in that scene where Young Xehanort meets Sora and not be anywhere else in the game, so the Coat being Vanitas makes somewhat sense. Your thoughts?

Yeah I thought about that too. When Vanitas was first created he had red eyes, and so does Anti-Black Coat. Ofcourse that is only said in the manga, but it could apply to the game as well. And yeah, he has to have some greater purpose that just appearing in one cutscene for 3 seconds, probably will be in KH3 or something

Well even in the latest interviews for DDD Nomura confirms its just a nightmare made from darkness.He confirms its the personification of the nightmare he was having.

It was one of the BbS novels which revealed what Vanitas looked like before Ventus connected with Sora.

He had a black head and red eyes, similar to Anti Black Coat's face. Something I noticed while fighting him is that he sometimes summons a thin blade and holds it like Vanitas holds his Keyblade. Anti Black Coat is also the same size as Vanitas. I believe Anti Black Coat is some kind of being created from both Sora and Vanitas.

I believe that this "nightmare" creature is Ventus' nightmare, I believe this theory as Ventus is part of Sora.

i think that too. everything ive heard and read about the nightmare and vanitas shows me that they are connected somehow.

Anti Black Coat is simply a Nightmare Dream Eater, Sora's nightmare given physical form. The Nightmare symbol even appears on its back before the battle starts. Nothing special about that.

Surprisingly, I don't think it is anything to do with Vanitas.

What it does in battle has to do with everything Sora's dreaming (Nightmaring?) about. The "Vanitas stance" is actually meant to be like Riku's.

Well, to make people happy, I suppose we can concede that since it was a personification of Sora's nightmare, it could be Vanitas-like in appearance, particularly since that would probably be the form of Ven's ultimate nightmare, but... it's just a nightmare. They just put it in the commercials to make us think its something thats not and to put us on edge. They actually kind of do that all the time with kingdom hearts games--things you think will happen turn out to be a little less than epic. I think DDD will be the least guilty of this, from what I've seen, but...well, that's what trailers do

I thought he said it was just a nightmare and nothing to think to much about. He could of course make it into something more in the future. But probably won't.

He said it was the personification of the nightmare . Those are his words . If he retcons it later that is on him .

its most likely linked to roxas. I haven't played the game but isn't riku the only on who fights him and roxas fought riku its probley how rozas grows his on heart. Mybe it was his nobody or heartless what if the. Heartless of a nobody has. Red eyes just geussing

I'd just say it's an embodiment of Sora & Ven's worst nightmares. Almost all of Sora's enemies have worn a coat, so that probably haunts him. His biggest battle was with Xemnas, that could explain the ethereal blades. Vanitas is Ven's dark side, so that probably had some influence in the embodiment as well, like the red eyes. As much as I wish Vanitas would return (which I'm sure he will in KH3) I think that was just a nightmare come to life.
