Do you think a game like Sword Art Online will be possible in the future?

Technology is surprising nowadays. Who's watched this Anime may have wondered: "Is it possible? *-*" (Click here to know about Sword Art Online Anime)

i think it will be possible. technology is very futuristic as it is now, so this might even happen sooner than most of us expect.(i expect like 2020 or 2016 :P)

Tecnhnology advances faster and faste each year so it would be no surprise to me if something is already on the works

LOL

I would love to play a game like that. Although, I would not like to be stuck in the game with no way out except to beat it or dieing when my avatar dies. Is there a manga series for SAO (Sword Art Online) in English, because I watched the first two episodes on crunchy roll and they were subbed; it was very good.

I just showed it to a friend. He loved it. We both are gamers, so we really hope something like that can be accomplished.

I really hope it does happen, it would be freaking amazing. :D

Probably, but I'm not sure if I want to play it if I'm going to die. How many people have died already? At least five people died in the first volume of Psyren. I only bring that up because it somewhat reminds me of Psyren, just a little. Also, does anyone notice the similarities between this and .hack?

Okay, IF Sword Art Online weren't made by a psyco and if it were safe.

The novel(the original) is the best version and you get the full plot unlike the anime(anime mostly has useless side stories but it's still nice to watch). That link has the novels and the manga linked in it. Also if you get a move on and watch all 16 episodes by Saturday then you can watch the raw version of episode 17 at Animehere at 1:00 est. Sub comes out a few hours after that.

Hard to say really. In honesty I think it "could" be possible, but because of the expense and dangers in creating such a game, I wonder if they would avoid creating it. Perhaps in the far future, but I personally doubt we'll get to see it in our lifetimes.

I would like to see something like that. And I wouldn't mind if I would be trapped in something as awesome game as that :3

I think so.

That would be pretty cool except for the being trapped in it part. xDSimilar to .hack//

I posted some information on an anime page where I went into some detail as to how it can be plausible  I do see now that it may not work in this context, but I will quote the information here.

(from my anime page: Anime Intoxication)

Anyone watch sword art online? There is this thing in it called nerve gear. This is something that intercepts the nerves from your brain and simulates you into another world. It is a game in the anime, but me and my brother debated the actual possibility of something like it. And it is, in theory possible, obviously with the addition of quantum computers (which are still under research and development)Only read on if you want to know how it would be plausible haha:With the addition of quantum computers, there will be no limitation to the processing power, which means the requirement of an almost unimaginable processing speed is possible. As a single quantum computer the size of a sugar cube can process in a year, what all the computers in existence today will take the entire life cycle of the earth to do. Then there is the factor of delay. The reason being is that if you have any lag whatsoever, that would make the possibility of simulating another world unplayable. (To have your actions only come after a while after you think is flawed, as it is normally instantaneous). The solution to such is in another secret of the quantum world which is called quantum entanglement. This is when two atoms are vibrated in the exact specific frequency. The thing this means, is that if the atom is in one state, the other will be in the exact opposite state instantaneously. There is no physical connection required, and therefore if they are even on the opposite sides of the planet, they will be able to transmit signals instantaneously. Lastly is the factor of storage. This will be based on the idea of the q-bit. The q bit is different from your regular bit, which is a 1 or a 0. A q-bit is a 1, a 0 or both. This means the data storage per q-bit is exponential. To put this into perspective. 2 quantum bytes, is roughly equivalent to 32 megabytes of data. a megabyte of quantum bits is 524288 Gigabytes (I say it like that so it seems bigger)Therefore, storage on a terabyte using quantum bits, will be able to store the location of every atom in the galaxy multiple times over. All of which can be instantly processed by a quantum computer. There are only two barriers to getting this technology. The first is the introduction of quantum computers and the technology with it (quantum entanglement etc)The second, is the interfacing of the computer and the data with the brain through the nerves. Which is the only possibility that is negotiable, however, with our current research into the brain, it is foreseeable that the possibility will arise.I give it 50 years... maybe less...

This was a while back, when I have just gotten to know the ideology of quantum computers and such, and in that text, I see the storage ordeal as a plausable problem, but I do not know the science behind it. (But in theory, it should work)

In 10 years to have a game like Sword Art Online is utterly impossible.

For any machine to run the game it would be necessary to have the processing power of a really powerful quantum computer.

And, well, The guy above me already said, more or less, how a quantum computer should work, even though I believe they're doing it wrong.

In either way, to create a quantum computer with our current technology, it would be needed a facilty by the size of the LHC. And there aren't many people that can have one of those at home.

Considering that the scientists have yet to figure out how to make a quantum computer work, and that this will take at least 20 years (remembering that each day we learn something different about these particles, making it even harder) there are still vary many years until these things can actually be taken to people's homes. And yet, these computers will be GINOURMOUS (aftar all, we are talking about particles traveling at the speed of light).

Sword Art Online is pure fantasy. HOWEVER!

In 2 years there will be enough hardware technology to create games like The World (dot.Hack series), and if it goes well, in 15 or so years there can be virtual reality games like The World available for us to play at our houses.

But this tech, as far as I know, is as dangerous as the technology described in both series... So... God knows. =P

In Japan....Yes. Outside Japan....No.
