Ok, so haven't pureblood (Shadows, Neoshadows, and Darkballs, giggity) heartless been around forever? And aren't they attracted to the keyblade? So then why are there non in BBS (I know they're in the secret episode, but since it's in the realm of darkness it doesn't really count) Squall explains in KH1 that heartless are attracted to the keyblade, or does that only apply to Sora's keyblade?

I think it was because the barriers to the worlds in KH1 were broken so the heartless could get in but in BBS the barriers were still up.

Heartless have ALWAYS existed. Ansem's apprentices made emblem heartless, which is why they have the heart insignia on them, and why purebloods don't. ANd heartless appear in BBS, play the FM version and get the secret episode

They existed, MX had the power to summon Neoshadows, he used them against Ven during training. The only reason they werent in worlds, is because the barriers were up, preventing interplanetary travel. So they didnt spread around until the 10 years leading up to KH1. After BBS.

They probably weren't able to leave the RoD until Ansem and maleficent took control of them. In DDD they can't enter the dream world because it's in a kind of lockdown

Its been said they always existed but just in smaller numbers until the fall of Radiant Gardens, and then the rest of the following events..Look at the neoshadows MX had attack Ven so he 'd be forced to fight back .

During the events of BbS Heartless existed but were confined to the Realm of Darkness unless summoned by someone with a powerful affinity for darkness. When the apprentices lost their hearts, their heartless appeared in the Realm of Light. Xehanort, under the name Ansem discovered the heartless and created the artificial "Emblem" heartless. This allowed heartless to proliferate in the realm of light by consuming hearts, thereby creating more heartless.

They lived inside the Realm of Darkness. At some point the a gateway was opened allowing them access to other worlds outside the Realm of Darkness.

I remember that in bbs heartless could only be summons into the world of light. And that when the world barrier is broken heartless can now enter the world searching for the worlds key hole. That's the whole reason for ,"this world has been connected, tied to the darkness." which brings up another question.

 

How does the barrier come down? I think it was explained once.

Also, the heartless were not released upon the worlds until Xehanort became 'Ansem', because the Heartless in the RoD aren't able to escape the RoD. If you read the Ansem Reports, the apprentices tried making a heart of pure light like Ventus's, but failed, and that released darkness became pureblood heartless. It was only then that heartless were released upon the worlds.

 

Besides, Vanitas is made from pure darkness, so he was a heartless, in a way.

heartless are creatures of darkness, so they have existed as long as realm of darkness. But since Xehanort didnt break orlds barriers and cause heartless invasion to happen yet, they dont exist in other worlds during time of BBS
