What is the Purpose of Region Locking?

Posted

It seems completely arbitrary to me. I don't see what any party could gain from it. If anything, doing it would lead to lost sales, wouldn't it? I mean, if a game is exclusive to one region, and another person wants it, they could still buy it it it's not region locked.

I mean, a person still has to PAY for it, and in a lot of cases they're going to be paying the maker in the first place.

And it's better than nothing, right?

I just don't get it

One word : Money ! If its region locked and the person wants that regions first bc of localization they would have to buy that regions console and game generating more money in order to play it ..Especially if the game wont get released ever in your region period. It forces you to buy another regions stuff plus whatever you bought from your region - like another portable console/ home console.

There is none, aside from the extra money companies get when they do so. Region locking means more consoles and games of different regions being bought and imported, which just gets the companies more money. I actually thought of importing a Japanese 3DS for a few games, but I honestly don't even think it's worth it right now.

But how many people actually do that? I mean, surely there's more money to be made selling games to EVERYONE, as opposed to hoping they'll buy the system twice...

But I mean like, sure, quite a few hardcore fans of something would probably do it. But what about in the grand scheme of things?

I mean, I was going to import the Final Mixes, before I found out Ièd bhave to spend hundreds of dollars at the end of the day.

But I'm sure if these region locked games were made readily available, lots of people would buy them.

Besides, most people who buy a system from another country are going to get it from a 3rd party...

Im not disagreeing with your logic .Im just giving the only logic companies usually go by :P

well we can be happy that kh3 will be on ps3 since it is unregion locked , AND if they make dlc for it , it is possible to get into the japanese psn store and download stuff

Cash....no matter how small.

I guess you'll follow up this thread with "What is the purpose of exclusives?"

Everyone says money, but I say that do it just to troll the world.

That's why I love Sony. Only the PSOne and PS2 are region-locked, and I have the Swap Magic to take care of that. No problems here.

Hm? No. Exclusives exist to draw a person to a console.

This doesn't constitute as an 'exclusive' it's more like an 'exclusion'

They're limiting what a person can do on their system

'Only half of their consoles are region locked'

Speaking of which, the PS3 actually got its first region locked game, apparently
