Sora Has the Weirdest Character Arc Ever

Posted

Think about it: in KH1, Sora is a fairly smart, optimistic boy who wants to see the world. he's a little naive, but has a strong sense of justice

In Com, he's angry all the time, but still an optimist.

In KH2, Sora is moronic and forgetful, and optimistic to a fault.

In KH3D, Sora has ADHD and is an optimist.

...

Does that even count as character development? I mean... what does that even mean?

Didn't Ansem the Wise say something like 'How long has it been since I've met him, a year?' when he was talking to Aqua in Blank Points? Not that I think he can accurately keep time in the realm of darkness.

Ansem the Wise did say it's been at least a year and he was very sure of it, though his memories were growing weak it didn't mean he couldn't keep track of time. He states it's been a year so we take it as a year.

I thought he meant it has been a year since their first meeting?

-- At one point in 'KHII', Ansem the Wise escapes from the world of darkness. This time he has once again descended into the world of darkness. At what point in time does this happen?

Nomura: After 'KHII'. When he stopped the Organisation's plans in 'KHII', he was caught up in an explosion and blown into the world of darkness. The line where he says, "I first met him one year ago," is referring to before 'he' went to sleep - that is, it's referring to the time of 'Chain of Memories'. It doesn't mean this is one year after 'KHII'.

This is stated in the Febuary 17, 2010 Famitsu magazine. Its in the interview archive of you want to see for yourself.

Yeah, that's what I thought it was. A year after the end KH2 seemed way too long.

So basically the time after he moved Sora to Twilight Town?

I would love to see how his experience in DDD changed and developed him .Nothing like a dose of darkness to help the character developement along

but in DDD all darkness was removed from him in the form of riku murderfacing the anti-black-coat-nightmare.....

i hate that boss

No that was a literal nightmare . The nightmare was defeated but he was still drowning in darknesss which is why Riku had to dive back into his heart in order to wake him up in the final boss. Ventus put his armor on Sora to protect him and the armor was covered with darkness remember ? Then Riku defeated it and then was finally able to awaken Sora.

In COM he went through puberty, duh

no he was 7, prove that we was 4 then ill believe..... even though i can prove he was 7

He was FOUR. He was 14 in KH 1, and BBS is 10 years before the first game........

I do think that Sora's character arc is faulty. He's a likeable enough character, but he's never challenged enough to really push him past his comfort zone. Don't get me wrong, Sora goes through some pretty serious circumstances, and he has a slight maturity spike by the end of KH1. The problem is that you never really see him suffer. Compare his plight to a similar character: Ventus. What I think makes Ventus a more dynamic character is that he has more personal conflicts to attend to. He worries about what's going to happen to Terra and frets when his two best friends suddenly fight. As someone very sheltered, Ven doesn't understand how his friends could suddenly be at each others' throats, and it prompts him to seek out new friends in the second half of his story.

He has his happier moments and shows a mature and insightful side when he encourages Stich about his broken Wayfinder and gives up Terra's wooden Keyblade. He moves beyond being the little kid his best friends treated him as, believing his memories are what matters... and then all hell breaks loose when he learns about the χ-blade. Ven's past comes back and shatters his understanding of his life before. He suddenly must face the fact that he's a pawn in Xehanort's scheme, his Master hid the truth from him all along, and the creation of the χ-blade could very well threaten the worlds. He's willing to die to prevent Xehanort's scheme from succeeding, but you can tell by the cutscene that he's scared. Very scared. At least when he tells his friends to put an end to him. What I find great about Ven is that you see a very broad range of emotions from him and you see him pushed to the limit. Sora... you kind of get that in KH2 when Kairi's kidnapped and you get a moment of doubt when he learns how the Organization plans on exploiting the Heartless, but otherwise, there's just not much turmoil for him beyond the threats he faces on his journey. It's why I find Riku a more interesting hero-- he falls far and then climbs his way back up throughout the games, creating a compelling character arc from start to finish. Character flaws and suffering make characters more endearing. if they go through hell, it's so much more satisfying when they succeed. KH3D had the right idea, but I feel that there needs to be more pain in Sora's future. More personal stakes.
