I always knew there was something shady about Riku... other than the fact that he covered his eyes with black cloth for almost two whole games

He beats da gals 'cause no one beats Riku, except maybe Sora, that's only because Sora has Main Character Power on his side. If not that, then it might be a bone thrown to the people who hate Xion and enjoy seeing her get her ass kicked.

Besides, I don't completly feel like Xion's a chick anyway. I see Xion more as 'the character who will be whatever gender you want it to be.'
