They actually touch up on that in the book World War Z written by Max Brooks, creator of the Zombie Survival Guide. In it there is a scene where the military tries to stop the zombies coming from NYC at Yonkers, a smaller city just a bit north of NYC(and one that I live only about 20 minutes out from). Basically it looked a little something like this.

 

The Military had no chance.
