Today, for the 4th time in their history, citizens of Puerto Rico held a referendum about if they wanted to change their current status as a territory (also for their governor, but who cares about that /shot). So far, the results are a bit...interesting.

Right now, it looks like about 63% of the voters want to change their status into an official US state, but only about 64% of the polling stations have reported their results so far. Of course, this is only a census and not a literal decision, so who knows what'll happen in the near future about their territorial status changing.

 

Anyway, what do you think about Puerto Rico possibly being the next state in the US?

I hope it happens soon, because Puerto Rico as well as other territories that belong to the U.S. should have the right to vote imo.

We could make a star formation out of all 51 stars. Have 1 big star in the middle and 10 stars for every arm of the bigger star

Technically, the US only has 46 states. Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia identify as commonwealths, not states. Also, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands are also commonwealths.

I'm neutral on this subject. If Puerto Rico becomes a state then good for them. If not well better luck next time.

That's surprising. Past votes have always been strongly against it.

I'm just glad the choice has always actually been up to them, and not forced upon them.

I don't really care if they become a state or not; if they do, welcome. If not, that's also fine.

 

The only thing that'll feel weird to me is reminding myself that it's 51 states now instead of the 50 I grew up with...I feel I'll be making that mistake for years to come.

I don't care too much if they do or don't become a state. If they do then good for them. If not then oh well.

We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

I hope they are aware that joining the US means paying our taxes and fighting in our wars. The country isn't what it used to be and it hasn't been that way for a long time. We had to stop paving our roads with gold and are now using bronze.

They should wait until 2016.

Being Half-Filipino, and having many Filipino relatives, I have to say that wasn't their best decision.

I'm from PR....this topic is kinda disturbing but I have to say we do have the right as USA territory so why cant we have the same privileges that the ones who live in the USA huh?

So I don't really care if were state were still brothers and were supposed to care for each other, because under Gods eyes were equal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we become a state,I hope we get help. We need the help. We really need the help. Goverment people have been stealing school fund money for years by now D: And we need to improve the security system too.

I'm Puerto Rican just like DestinySeeker, and I really don't particularly care. We are a commonwealth, but we're still both American and Puerto Rican citizens. The only downside is that we don't get to make decisions like the States, But I think we'd be fine either way.

It seems really weird. Tey speak another language, have a completely different culture. But well, it's not like they should be separated... i really don't know what should be done, it depends on how citizens of both sides feel, as well as their governments. They should held a big voting, but for both sides (I'm not sure they held one for Americans, I didn't really understand that )
