Hey there guys, here is the latest chapter of my story!  I see that you’re all enjoying it, and I’m so happy because of that!  I hope you continue to keep on reading! And remember that this chapter will be from Vincent Grace’s point of view. Hehe, without further ado, here is Chapter Four!

Chapter Four: Clues

I’m in my office, getting ready to head out towards downtown.  The sun is starting to get covered up by looming rainclouds, giving the indication that it might rain.  I pack up my things and I head out, and then I head towards my car.  I start the car and start driving.  My mind is heavily focused on the case of this little boy named Tyler.  The day before, I was in Starbucks, and I met this guy named Derek, who seemed to be stressed out about something.  When I asked him what it was about, he told me that he had been helping the police to try to solve the case of Tyler Thompson, who had been raped then killed alongside his mother.  The moment he said this, it intrigued me, and so I decided that I would help on the case.  He then told me that I had to meet this girl named Rose Everdawn.  According to him, she was the person with whom Tyler was the most attached to.  And so, that’s the reason I’m going downtown now, to meet up with her.

By the way, the name is Vincent Grace.  I’m 22 years old, was born in Great Lakes, Chicago, and I’m a professional detective.  Some call me the best in the business, some call me the modern day Sherlock Holmes.  Some people even compare me to L from Death Note. I was always a quite person during my childhood and teenage years, but I had a few friends here and there.  There was even a time when girls would want to date me, but I didn’t do such a thing, because none of the girls I met were special.  None of them had what I was looking for… Anyways, I’ve been a detective since earlier than you might expect.  At the early age of 15, I was enamored with criminology and delving into the human psyche.  I would always watch CSI, Law and Order, and other shows like that, and I would always read many detective books.  I know, most of you would think of this as childish, but that’s what actually got me into being a detective.  For my young age, I was abnormally smart, and I knew that I could be able to lend my talents for the greater good.  I remember when I was 16, and a murder had been committed in my neighborhood.  The police spent weeks trying to piece together how the murder was committed, while I had already figured it all out.  I explained to the police that the murderer had emotional ties with his victim, and that the murder was committed over a dispute about money.  The man had threatened to kill her if she didn’t give him his money, but she resisted, and he killed her.  I showed all the evidence to the police, and they were impressed with my skills, and they decided to take me under their wing.

And here I am, six year later, and I’ve solved dozens of major cases.  But I tell you, it’s not easy.  While I am always devoted to my job, I know that I am a major target to the criminal underworld.  They all know of my presence, and they know what I’m capable of.  And so I know that they might kill me at any time, but I’m always prepared for the case that I might find myself in a life or death predicament.  I keep driving down the road and then I come upon a local park, and I see Derek waving at me.  I park the car and then head towards him.  He shakes my hand and says: “Once again Mr. Grace, thank you so much for offering to help us with the case!”  I nod and smile and take off my glasses and say: “Please, call me Vincent, there’s no need to be so formal.”  Derek nods and then says:  “Rose will be here any minute.  She’ll tell you what you need to know.  Oh and by the way, I forgot to mention, she’s blind, so don’t make any comments about that.”  I glare at him and say:  “I’m not the kind of person that does that.  You don’t have to worry.”  Derek then points to his right and say: “Here she comes.”

The minute I lay my eyes on her, I’m taken by surprise, and I freeze.  She’s so beautiful…her long black hair flowing to her shoulders, her face so innocent and gentle, the modest nature of how she walks, which implies that she’s not the kind of girl to show off, but at the same time isn’t afraid of being herself.  I shake my head and turn away for a moment, still dazzled by her…then I turn around and notice her gray eyes, the way how they are fixed upon me, even though she can’t see.  She approaches me, and she seems nervous, almost afraid to be near me.  She says: “Good morning…”  I think of reaching out my hand for a handshake, but somehow I sense that she doesn’t feel comfortable, so I simply put on my glasses and sit on the bench, while Derek watches silently.  I clear my throat and say: “Good morning Ms. Everdawn.  I’m glad you could come here.  I need to ask you some questions regarding Tyler.”  She nods, indicating for me to start asking her questions.  I look at her attentively and ask:  “How long did you know Tyler Thompson?  Was he a new student or was he already a student for a considerable amount of time?”  She says to me: “I knew Tyler for three years.  He was one of my most cherished students.”  I nod and write that down and proceed to the next question: “And did he ever tell you of anyone that was endangering him or his mother?”  She quickly responds: “No. On the contrary, he always talked about how much he loved his mother, and he would tell me of all the things they did together.  But he never told me of anyone who might possibly want to hurt him.”  I take a moment to analyze this answer, and then I ask one final question: “Have any other of your students been murdered before Tyler?”  She nodded no, and then I closed my eyes.  I took a moment to analyze the answers at hand, and then I stood up and looked at the sky.

Derek looks at me curiously, while Rose remains silent, and then Derek says: “So, what do you make of it?”  I look at him and then say:  “Well, it’s quite simple really.  Tyler was murdered by an unknown assailant, and from what Rose has told me, he had no emotional conflict with anyone.  But, it seems that the murderer committed this crime, as if to signal a certain person, maybe to symbolize someone’s past.  Because I’ve worked on people that have gone through traumatizing experiences, and those that have gone through such things are likely to experience some repercussion to the event years later.  In the event that my assumption is correct, then we are dealing with a potent serial killer.  He might be the same person that committed the crime to another individual years earlier, or it might be a relative.  It’s too early to tell though, but I imagine it might have to do with something about Ms. Everdawn’s past.  Isn’t that right Rose?”  Derek opens his mouth wide and says: “What do you mean?  Rose hasn’t been through something like that!  Right Rose…?”  I see Rose lower her head, indicating that my assumption is correct.  I don’t ask any more questions so that I don’t make them feel more uncomfortable than they already are.

I observe them carefully and then I tell them:  “Come with me, we’ll go to my house and examine more evidence and get to the bottom of this.”  Derek asks:  “But, don’t you work in an office?”  I smile and look back at him and say:  “I also have a private office at home.  It’s preferable, since it’s more secluded from anyone that might want to snoop in too much into this.  Come on, let’s go.”  Derek quickly gets in the car, but I see Rose hesitate, almost as if regretting to have come.  I look at her and say:  “Don’t worry, nothing bad will happen.  You can trust me”  She then nods and gets in the car, and then I hear her say in a soft whisper:  “Thank you.  Thank you so much for helping us…”  I nod and then I start driving, and we all remain quite on the way to my house.  Along the way, I think of what connection might Rose have with the killer.  Was she raped by the same person, considering if the murderer is indeed the same or a relative?  And if so, why did the murderer leave her alive?  I’d have to ask her questions about her past, but I would have to do that some other time, when Derek isn’t around, because from what I saw, she didn’t want anyone to know about her past. All the questions swirled in my head, and I kept wondering what possible explanation there could be to all of this.  But, at least one thing’s for certain.  We’ve got our first clue.

Okay guys, here’s the next chapter!  By the way, when you finish reading, I want you all to answer me a question.  Do you like the way I’m writing this story?  Originally I was going to do it from a third person perspective, but then I realized that it was better if I wrote it from a first person perspective.  And so, I want to ask you all, do you like the way the story is written?  Please be sure to answer and comment on the chapter when you finish reading! :D

Chapter Five: Investigation

About twenty minutes later, we make it to my house.  It’s not exactly in the city, so to speak.  It’s in a more natural place, with a forest serving as my backyard.  I park the guard in my nearby shed, and I urge Derek and Rose to get out of the car.  I unlock the door to my house, and then we all step in.  I turn towards them and say: “Make yourselves at home, but please don’t touch anything fragile, or anything that has to do with my research.  I like to be very organized, so I don’t want any messes here, understood?”  They nod and they both sit down in the living room.  I head towards the kitchen and get myself some water, and then I observe Rose and Derek from the counter.  Rose silently lowers her head down, as if in a deep train of thought, while Derek looks around the house curiously.  I sip my cup of water and continue to observe them.  I then sigh and finish up my cup of water and offer them some refreshments.  Rose says in an almost silent whisper: “No thank you…” while Derek nods that he doesn’t want any water.  After a few minutes, I call out to them and tell them to come with me into the hall.

Derek looks at me and then asks: “Um, what are we doing here?”  I glare at him and say: “This is where my office is, but I’m going to have to ask you to turn away.”  He nods and he turns away while I enter the password into the small keyboard hidden behind a portrait of me as a little boy.  When the keyboard beeps, the hall gives way to a set of stairs that lead downward.  I then tell Derek that he can turn around, and then he gasps in amazement.  He says: “Wow, this is pretty neat!  You’re like the Batman of real life!”  I look at him then turn around and roll my eyes: “Um, sure.  Thanks.  Anyways, come down with me.”  Derek goes down the stairs, but I see Rose just standing there on the hallway, her heard turned away from me.  I approach her and say: “Look, I know that you don’t feel comfortable, but I just want to tell you that you can trust me.  If there’s anything at all you need, or if there’s something you’d rather tell me in private, then just let me know.”  She turns around, again with her eyes gazing upon mine, even though she’s blind.  She runs her fingers through her hair and she says:  “Vincent…I appreciate what you’re doing…but just don’t…”  I look at her and reply:  “Don’t what?  She folds her arms and says:  “I know that you’re trying to get into my mind.  I know that you’re trying to help me, but just don’t.  I’m a lost cause…”  I lean in closer to her, and this time, she doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable, and I just say:  “No one is ever a lost cause.  Don’t sell yourself short.”  She nods and then she says: “Vincent.  Let’s just focus on the matter at hand…”  I take a moment and then say: “Rose…I-“ but I’m cut short by Derek, who’s calling us from the basement.  He shouts: “Hey, are you guys coming down or what?  I step away from Rose, a little dazed by her beauty, and then I go down the stairs, and I hear Rose coming down behind me.

The minute I enter my office, I see Derek touching one of my books and I shout: “Hey, don’t touch that!!!”  Derek jumps back, startled, and he falls on his butt.  He then says: “Sorry!   I didn’t mean to touch anything!”  I hear Rose giggle softly, and I smile for a moment, thinking of her…but then I shake off the thought and then I clear my throat.  I go straight to my desk and sit down, and tell them to take their seats.  I nod at them and say: “All right, let’s get down to business.  Do any of you two know of any other incident that has involved this type of murderer?”  Derek nods no, and Rose just stays silent, making me think that she’s hiding something valuable.  I observe them both and then I lean back on my chair and clean my glasses:  “Hmm, it seems that we won’t get that much far if we don’t have any sort of lead.  The only thing we do know is that the killer is signaling someone.  But either it be a simple taunt or just a gesture of madness is yet to be seen.  And of all the people the murderer could target, why did the person choose a small child as its victim?  I mean seriously, wouldn’t the murderer have killed a corrupt politician, or even any person that relates to the branch of law and order?  It boggles the mind…”  I lower my head and close my eyes and enter in deep thought.

(Start Song Here)
I hear Derek shift in his chair and then he says: “Well, whatever the case, we’ll be sure to help you, and justice is in our side!”  I chuckle grimly and then fix my gaze upon him and say:  “That is an out of place word Derek.  Justice does not truly exist.  The world you think you know to be safe and peaceful is really just a wide network of deceit and lies and cover ups.  The government makes laws to get more money, and money gives them power, and power makes them corrupt.  No true justice exists here in this Earth.  Every day you see judges get bribed, and most of the time the people that go to jail are the innocent and hardworking people, while the criminals roam the streets, preying on the weak.  And yet the people are too blind to see this, and they choose to go with the flow of things.  But let me tell you something Derek, the only true justice that exists is that of God.  He is Alpha and Omega, and his judgment is the only one that truly works.”  Derek then stays silent, and then I fix my gaze towards Rose.  She seems amazed by my words, and then she asks me:  “Did you ever consider to be a politician?”  I laugh and say:  “No, that doesn’t work for me.  I prefer being in this line of work, which lets me do what I think is just.  And so far, I’ve made small differences in the world, even though their small.  But the smallest thing can make the biggest difference, right?“ She nods and says: “Right.” and I see a smile form on her face.

After a few seconds, I say:  “All right, let me do a bit of investigating.”  They nod and sit back in their chairs, apparently waiting for what I’m about to say next.  I search in my computer for murders related to the one in this case, and, surprisingly, a result pops up.  I then lean towards my desks and look at them:  “All right, according to my computer, there are a few murders that have occurred in this same manner, and they all seem to have a link.  Most of the murders are exactly the same as the one presented in Tyler’s case, but there’s one in which the victim was left alive.  But what’s interesting here though, is the fact that none of these murders have been solved, and the murderer has never been captured.  Hmph, it’s irritating how no one’s seemed to solve this.  Why didn’t anyone contact me when these murders happened?”  Rose says nothing, and I just see her remain silent, which again makes my suspicions about her being tied to the murderer even more correct.  Derek then says:  “So, what should our first step be?”  I ponder his question, and I twirl my fingers on the various paper clips on my desk.  I then look up to the ceiling and say:  “Well, for starters, it’s wise to go to the place where this crime occurred.  There’s sure to be some kind of evidence there that can help us piece this up.  But I’m going to the crime scene alone.” Derek stands up and pounds his fist on the desk: “Why can’t we go with you!?”  I glare at him and say:  “Do not argue with me Derek.  I know what I’m doing.  If I require of your assistance again, I’ll contact you.”  Rose then stands up and says:  “Vincent’s right Derek, we should let him get into this first and then contact us.”  Derek stays silent and he just turns away.  I then get some papers and write down my phone number and give it to Derek, and then I turn toward rose and ask:  “Do you have any sort of machine that can record data so that you can have my number?”  She nods and says:  “Yeah, my phone has a voice recorder/voice command calling method so I can call anyone by just saying their name.”  I nod and then she gives it to me and I say my phone number and the phone records it. I then ask her:  “Where was the crime committed?”  She responds: “On Route 59.”  I nod and then we get out of the house and then I drive them back to the city.  I nod and say:  “Thank you for your help, I’ll be sure to contact you again real soon.”  And so I drive towards Route 59.  I will solve this case, of that I’m sure.
