Now on this site Cod gets alot of hate, and some of it is justified but the main complain that it's same core game year after year isn't very fair complained. Because so many games that are loved on this site are same core game year after year. Examples: Mario Kart, 2-d Mario games, Pokemon, Assassin's Creed, Mega man as well many other games. Why do these games get free passes? I'm not saying that this is a knock against these games, i enjoy them and they do what they do well that's why they haven't had to change. To a lot of people cod plays great and they enjoy that, why hate a series you don't have to play.

Note: I don't play cod but i just thought it would be interesting to point this out.

It's not that we have a problem with the same core game, the problem is the gameplay itself. There's literally been no new gameplay introduced into the CoD series, unlike in games like Mario Kart where you can perform tricks and go underwater etc.,  and Assassin's Creed, where new combos and abilities are being added. Call of Duty is simply... shooting people. Why some people find that so addictive is beyond me, I mean you don't even kill them in a cool way like in AC you just shoot them. Its been the same way since Call of Duty 2. The last innovation CoD had was Zombies, and many other games offer a far better Zombie experience than CoD (Left 4 Dead, Zombie U, Dead Island, etc.)

There's also your stereotypical CoD Player:

Cod is just shooting?

Mario kart is just racing

Assasin's Creed is just killing people

Mario is just running and jumping

Cod changed multiplayer landscape and also just cause a games simple doesnt mean it isnt entertaining.

also how do tell with them is simple

I don't have a problem with the game, I used to enjoy cod4 on the pc very much..... its just that the age and maturity of most people who play the game now has declined sharply since then....

I don't play CoD myself, but that's kinda true. It's also great to have some fun with friends, it's not only bad.

This happens because it's not a classic like Mario or MegaMan, and honestly, it's not what fits with the games we members from the site play it.

The series basically is a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" type of thing. You could argue the same thing about Mega Man, but at least Mega Man has branching series (Legends, X, Zero, ect). With Call of Duty, all your doing is pointing and shooting. New game comes out, new weapons, same formula of "Point and Shoot". Not to mention the story aspect is a video game version of a Michael Bay film. People can like what they like of course, but I honestly think shooting things is a drag.

I used to play Black Ops for some odd reason, and I honestly grew sick of it.

I believe the reason that CoD gets the level of hate it does is here is mainly because KH13 isn't the targeted audience. The majority of people here are into RPG's, action platformers, etc., which tend to focus more on story and characters. Call of Duty focuses on a different style of gameplay that (I feel safe in assuming) a good chunk of RPGers aren't familiar with, focusing more on a massive multiplayer experience and competition than necessarily delivering a good story.

It's not so much that the game itself is terrible, so much as this isn't really the audience of gamers which CoD aims to please.

If someone likes CoD that's fine. This is something it's alright to have opinions for. I agree that some games like mario kart and some others do the same thing, although with a different type of gameplay. Honestly, I don't hate nor do I like Cod. I'm just indifferent to it.

but x, zero, and zx are pretty much the same formula with different features added onstill a sidescroller

Some game critics would say Cod 4 story is better than KH story.

Whaaa? KH's story isn't the greatest, but whaaa?

and true they kinda are, but at least it's something different from regular mega man. CoD isn't the best game ever, but I agree it set a standard for online play, which is cool.

Actually, the first black ops was a step in the right direction, treyarch added a lot of things that I felt moved away from the same stale formula ... too bad they sold themselves out for black ops 2, to think I actually had hope that they would put a good game before money.....

Allow me to show you what is different between these games and Call of Duty

Mario Kart: Each new edition has new characters, new items, new vehicles, new tracks, and considering that each release is on a different console, new technology allowing for a slight, but significant change to overall gameplay.

2-D Mario: Generally the same as Mario Kart and goes for all Mario games, each new one introduces new characters, items. Nintendo again being the big 3 company that takes advantage of new technology the most, the gameplay can be significantly changed.

Pokemon: New region, new storylines, but mostly new pokemon between each game. The new pokemon allow for a refreshing experience as their own unique traits can make for wildly varied match ups against the pokemon of this generation and the previous ones.

Assassin's Creed: How can this even be brought up? Sure the gameplay is more or less the same but the story is drastically advanced in every game and the various settings of each new Assassin's Creed game allows for a very unique feel to it.

Megaman: Never played it, so I can't comment on it.

And now let's point out everything that has stayed the same in Call of Duty for a long time.

-Graphics have not improved since COD4. Every game since then uses the same game completely outdated game engine with only slight improvements over the years.

-Story. The WW2 games are always KILL NAZIS AND JAPS HURR DERP, the modern games are always ZOMG TERRORIST AND RUSSIANS SHOOT DEM. and the black ops games go something along the lines of MOAR RUSSIANS TO KILL CONSPIRACY THEORIES PLOT TWIST AND CONSPIRACY THEORIES ABOUT PLOT TWISTS!  Yeah theres slightly more to it than that but going into further detail would make the story sound even more stupid. For example. How the firetruck can the ENTIRE RUSSIAN AIRFORCE fly over Alaska, Canada, and the Midwest and drop troops over Washington DC without being spotted by anyone?

Gameplay: Does this even need explaining? Same guns every time, same attachments for the guns every time, new guns are just reskinned versions of old guns. A weapon is either horribly overpowered or completely useless. You will respawn in a horrible spot and die instantly 9/10 times and killstreaks are just a fancy term for "I win" buttons. In fact, the MW2 nuke was literally an "I win!" button.

Community: 40% pre-pubescent suburban boys who got spoiled by their mothers, 30% douchey teenagers, 20% morbidly obese 40 year old virgins, and 10% of people you would actually like and are good people but are too scared of the rest of the community to find putting their microphones in worth it.

Not going to lie, the multiplayer shooter genre has gone into the shithole as of lately. Almost everyone is trying to copy COD and are dragging the entire genre down. Those that aren't trying to copy COD though are doing fantastic but are simply not getting the recognition they deserve.

I could really rant about this all day. Actually, I couldn't. If I really wanted to pin down each and every little thing wrong with every COD game since WaW (after WaW they went to shit) then I would most likely collapse into a coma from how long it would take to do it non-stop.

As a CoD player, I agree that there isn't much gameplay changes since MW2. The only reason that people play CoD is the feeling of being competitive. Players want to show that they have what it takes to be the top dog.

In story perspective, I only liked the BO1 and BO2 stories for it involves internal conflict, and that's the kind of stories i like.

Now lately, I now see a pattern about treyarch re-using stuff used in campaign modes, but after a recent release of Uprising DLC, It kinda got a little bit of my faith restored, because each map is unique. They don't reuse anything from the BO2 storyline. And as for Mob of the Dead, it is unique, because that is the only zombie map to actually END.

Of course, there will be a new CoD game soon, but if it looks the same, I probably just get Battlefield 4.

@Amon- i'm one of the 10%. I believe in good sportsmanship, but the other 90% are just fricking douches. And of course, I always hit the mute on preteens that are acting like idiots.

they get free passes since they don't have bs kills like for example in BO2 "i shoot a whole mag into you and somehow you stab me"

You seem to have a chip on your shoulder about call of duty and fps in general, I have been an fps player literally my entire life and I can see large differences between each game even if they are formulaic,

the changes in them is the same as in a mario cart game

- new maps = new tracks

- new guns = new carts

I used to despise CoD, and I still do, more or less, but in the end it's just another rehashful series. I play it with my friends whenever they play it just for the heck of it, so there's not much harm. I wouldn't really mind the series if people didn't treat it like the pinnacle of gaming though, that's what really makes me annoyed by it. Like stated in this thread, it's kind of funny when somebody says "CoD is a rehash!!111!" yet they go and eat up games like New Super Mario Bros., which are just as repetitive. People should just play what they feel like and not shove it into other people's faces.

Some game critics would say Cod 4 story is better than KH story.

I do not hate CoD but I don't like it either. But this ^ is absurd.

Cod is just shooting?

Mario kart is just racing

Assasin's Creed is just killing people

Mario is just running and jumping

I never said it wasn't entertaining, I just said I don't find it addictive. It changed the multiplayer landscape how? Just by having a surplus of people? It didn't change shit, it simply appealed to more people (albeit a bunch of potty-mouthed little kids). Besides, all CoD literally is shooting and knifing people. What more is there to that?

Edited by Master Juan

I actually liked older CoDs a lot and I would really really like to love newer ones as well. Pretty much what I can't understand about CoD is that the things I loved about CoD 4 are ruined and it seems that they don't have interest to fix things that actually need to be fixed.

Gun balance: probably the most horrifying thing about never games. You unlock new weapon! That is nice, but unfortunately it actually is just bad and it is better to use these OP FMG-9 alien beetle weapons that kill people in seconds and are as accurate as in other guns in game. Use these, or be killed by these!

Map design: seriously, I played MW3 like ten hours and I didn't find one memorable or actually fun map that I wanted to play in.

Not putting focus on interesting game modes: seriously, HQ pro was my favorite game mode. I haven't seen anything similar in other games and it actually forces on some kind of team co-operating. but no, give us TDM and some Kill Confirmed and everyone is happy running around map killing everyone who comes across you.

No interest in actual competitive gaming: the game does not have different matchmaking for ranked gaming where you could actually do something competitive, so have fun and play forever with scrubs.

Seriously, I like gameplay and campaign is some nice fast paced action that you actually want to play to the end unlike campaign of BF3 which is horrible. CoD franchise could redeem itself by giving some time to itself and trying to refresh old formula and making something revolutionary for next gen like they did for current gen with CoD 4

And yes, DLC practice of Activision is horrible.

dinfinding it but i have to say this i play shooters i own a few mostly ps exclusives cod has shitty story  true the online multiplayer is the same thing over and over just more things better graphics  im more into fighters  but as i see it if a person likes a game then let them like the game but on a site where the game has nothing to do with the site dont bring it up if you dont like cod then don't talk bad about it just don't think about it i enjoy it when i play with friends and i just mute everyone else all games ahve there repetitive points its just nature of the game so be mature about it and stop bad mouthing it

Ah but the difference between Mario Kart is that the new stuff is good, whereas in COD the new stuff is utter crap either in being broken or horrendously overpowered. MW2 was the worst offender of this.

Lets not bring opinion into this, I quite enjoyed the map packs for mw2, I had a lot of fun playing stealth clown on Carnival with my friends xD you see its really all in the eyes of the user that makes something good or bad, so at face value mw2 and mario cart are the same.
