So I've never played a pokemon game but it feels like most of people play the games and like them, so I've been thinking I might try one, when I'll have time (and money). So which game is the best in your opinion?

The Gameboy Color versions of Silver, Gold, and Crystal are my personal favorites. (Before anyone says, I AM NOT A GENWUNNER. I LOVE THE NEW GAMES TOO)

I like Platinum the best and Heartgold second, but if you want to get up to date with every new pokemon get White 2. But since Heartgold and Soulsilver are kind of two games in one they are really good. Instead of the average 8 gyms, they have 16

Platinum and Heartgold/Soulsilver show the Atmosphere from the old Gens the best imo...

All of them! 

 

To start, however, I'd go with HG or SS. 

SoulSilver, hands down

SoulSilver or HeartGold for Second Generation, for Fifth, choose Black and White 2. Not the first one. Black and White 2 has some of the original pokemon, not just gen 5!
