Final Fantasy usually follows a Turn-Based battle system, some often having a gauge that fills up before attacks can be made. No Final Fantasy is really connected to another, so you can play them in any order you want.

If you have a PlayStation console, (Like the PS3) you can pretty much play all of them, through the Store. I recommend Seven, Six, Four, and Nine.

I'd say start with FF7. It's pretty easy, and it's a great game.

FF9 is absolutely fantastic, and the battle system isn't that complicated.

If you want a complicated but fun battle system, play FF8. Don't go in expecting much from the storyline though.

Also, FF12 is quite underrated, IMO.

Currently playing FF6 and FF13 both for the first time, 13 is pretty good and I'm not far enough into 6 to make a judgement yet.

All of the storylines are completely separate. Don't worry about missing out on anything by starting with a random FF title.

I liked FF 10 and 3 the best. They're both pretty different but still good. I started with 3 then played 10 then played 4 and 1 and many more that I'm forgetting

FF7, FF10 and FF13 are great games to start off from. FF7 is if you don't mind graphics and you like reading text and fighting traditionally like almost every FF game, I couldn't finish FF7 though do to it always freezing when I get to a certain part, plus its been a long time but I still think its a nice game.

FF10 is amazing out of the 3, it came around the same time as KH1 so you can expect the graphics to be similar to KH1, plus there is voice acting but know thats the first game in the series that had a huge improvement in graphics plus which had most of its scenes being fully voice acted. The battle system is traditional and the story is near perfect and the music is beautiful.

FF13 is if you like your characters being versatile but having auto battle mechanics instead of selecting a move for you. Of course there is an option for you to select a move yourself, but the Auto-Battle system is a good option. The game gets backlash from the fans but it all depends on you, I liked it a lot unlike other fans of the series. FF10 and FF13 have similarities as well, even if FF10 is better than FF13 imo. If you don't care about linearity, then this is a good game to start off with. It also has amazing graphics and has fully voice acted scenes. The story is good also, the music is fantastic too.

-Unless your VERY good at RPJs do NOT start with Final Fantasy 1,2 or 3 because they are very hard,I'd recommend you to start with 6 because its the easiest one(at least to me).

-That's just my personal opinion, but I would only focus on playing FF 1 to 10 because they are better games and then if you're interested, maybe you could 11 to 13 later or not at all :)

-If you end up liking Final Fantasy VII PLAY "Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII",its fantastic and its on PSP.

-If you want to play Final Fantasy VI you should avoid the PS1(PSN) version, because from what I've heard this version have long load times and the SNES version doesn't so buy FFVI on the Wii shop instead of playstation Network.

-Unlike all the other games,in Final Fantasy 10 and 13 you are not playing on an open world, you are playing on a linear path most of the time, but its not that big of a deal.

I'd say start with FF7. It's pretty easy, and it's a great game.

How is XII underrated? It' got a perfect score from Famitsu.

Oh... Well, people that I hear are always saying it was awful and that "the ff series went downhill after X" and "you don't even need to touch the controller to play it" and crap like that.

Take everyone's opinions with a grain of salt.  Everyone's got their own things to say about each game, like the XII example above.  The one that's the least polarizing while still being at a comfortable difficulty is VI.

imo, If not VI, then IX.  You can try starting out with VII, too, since the materia system is like BBS's commands and it's not too difficult save for a handful of bosses.  I suggest VIII or X only after you play VII, since their mechanics are probably the most complicated of the first ten FFs.

Of course, how the story and gameplay of each stands will be up to you.  I still personally recommend VI, VII, or IX.

Like Silver Kuroi said, most of FF games are turn based, but have a gauge the fills, which allows you to perform your actions, and you have to wait for it to completely fill. There are a couple certain FF games however, that instead of being turn based, are action RPG's like KH. Some of these games, are FF XV, Lightning Returns: FF XIII, and Crisis Core: FF VII. Most of the action RPG FF games are mostly spin offs, Sequels, and Prequels.

You can play pretty much all the numbered FF titles on PS3(but not all of the spin offs, sequels, and prequel games though) but i recommend holding off for the PS4, since it has the PSN where you can get all the main title FF games, plus itll have GGXV and presumably FF XV-2.

I recommend these FF games:

FF6, FF7, FFX, and FF13. And their sequels/prequels.

I suggest with X, and X-2 as well as XIII and XIII-2 also. Simple yet challenging, but also the fun factor.

Since no one here mentioned historical facts I'm gonna post a history lesson for ya ^_^

Final Fantasy started in 1986 on the NES,the serie was created when Hironobu Sakaguchi was developing a game that would be the last chance for Square back then before they go bankrupt, and from that came the name of Final Fantasy as it was supposed to be Square's last attempt before they close. However the first game on the NES was incredibly successful and from that a new series was born to rival Dragon Quest and dominate the JRPG genre

So far,The main series has 3 games on NES(I,II,III),three games on SNES(IV,V,VI),three games on Ps1(VII,VIII,IX),three on Ps2(X,XI,XII),two on Ps3(XIII,XIV...the sequels of 13 are considered spin-offs),two on Xbox 360(XI,XIII)

The Final Fantasy franchise has a huge amount of spin-offs,ranging from sequelprequels for the main games,to it's own spin-off series like FF Tactics,FF Crystal Chronicles,The Chocobo Dungeon series, the Dissidia crossover series....etc

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't know a lot about FF either (well I know about Dissidia, the XIII series, XIV, XV and a little bit of VII). I would like to know more too!

you should start out with 7 or 10
