Sleep Paralysis

Recommended Posts

Just a warning, I don't find this scary but some people might. I don't know, just don't wanna get yelled at by those people haha.

Ok if you don't know what it is, sleep paralysis is basically when you lose the ability to move (paralysis) while you are waking up or about to fall asleep. When I was 9 or 10, I experienced this. I was lying on my back and I woke up, but I hadn't noticed I was unable to move. And at the foot of my bed was something that looked like a man in a hat and a coat, pulling on my fan string over and over and over again. I was beyond scared, but all I could do was look at it! I was talking to my friend about this and he said he had a similar experience. Well experiences. Basically all of his younger life consisted of him dealing with sleep paralysis. He said he could see the outline of a man (he calls it shadow person, I looked it up and I guess that's a common phrase for it) and it just stood there. Now I'm really interested in this whole subject. But I'm just wondering, has this ever happened to anyone else?

I have that before a couple time.. It sucks, because honestly it feels like a shadow or something is watching over you and you can't do anything about it. It only last about a minute the most 5 minute...But for those long minutes I feel intense, scared, and I can't do anything since my body won't move.

Was he..by any chance seemingly larger in size than a normal man?

Ever heard of Old Hag Syndrome?  xD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

haha I have now! That's weird, the hag sits on top of you lol.

edit: It's so strange how many people report of seeing the same thing. I've been researching it and everyone describes "the hat man" almost identical to what I saw: Hat and coat (either wide or long).

It happened to me many times when I was youngr, sometimes he would reach his hand out to me. My dad said he constantly saw the shadow standing over my sister once when she was asleep. This was during a stage when she was sick. Then we found out a couple of weeks later she had terminal brain cancer and would of only had a couple of days to live had we not found out. My mum and dad also said that that they saw the shadow standing over my dad for a couple of weeks on and off, and then we found out he had lung cancer. I think the shadow represents "Death" and is something not to be taken lightly.

You should look into astral projection/out of body experiences.

Also I've learnt how to induce sleep paralysis and learnt that it was a normal sensation that is not dangerous

I have before. Astral projection is pretty hard to accomplish for me though. I've had a small out of body experience before, it felt like my mind was higher up than my body. Can't really explain it

you should try binaural beats to help

Yeah I will check into that.

My dad has a chair at his office called Theracoustic, and it pretty much uses sound and vibrations to put you into a meditative trance. It's pretty interesting

I've had that once, only I couldn't move, breath,or talk and I could have sworn I saw something standing on the stairs to my bed, later my friend told me that some say its a demon that causes you to not move because it is sitting on your chest? I dont really know but it is very creepy

I have tried to induce sleep paralysis before, in hopes that I could do a WILD (wake-induced lucid dream) and be in complete control. My reasons for doing this were to try to explore my mind because there was a day dream like thing that bothered me for a long long time... Though the 20-30 times I tried I felt as if I was mocked...were I would start to lose control of my body, and then usually feel a rush of energy and be forced to get up. And one time my eyes started to move on their own probably a bit similar to REM sleep... Though want to know what? I saw absolutely nothing, nor did I feel or hear anything not accounted for in my room... (also that time I felt almost fully rested) After a while of trying and getting similar results I ended up being able to just flip a switch to make me able to consciously move my limbs or not. (though that switch doesn't work anymore)

Anyways that's my experience with sleep paralysis.

Idk if I had this before. But I would like to ask something.

Sometimes when I'm about to sleep I feel like I'm falling so I pretty much jump. Anyone know the cause and how it works? Or atleast what Its called. I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about.

If it really does represent death, then ive never seen it.

Ive never had sleep paralysis at all in my life. Its weird when you get that, that you see a HOODED MAN FOR NO REASON. That is firetrucking creepy ass shit.

I've experienced this quite recently for the first time and it is one of the most odd events that will ever occur in your life.  The event makes you paranoid beyond belief, I woke up once and could not more either.  Could not move my whole body, any of it.  I could feel someone exactly where you felt the man, but it was a girl instead.  I had thought it was just my sister coming to say hi to me, but the more I tried to talk and couldn't, the more paranoid I got.  I eventually just went back to sleep.

Apparently, if you body is over fatigued, you can experience this.  It's at a point when you wake up, but your body still thinks it's asleep, regardless, the best thing to do is try to sleep through it.  You will feel like someone's there, but hopefully it's just a figment of your imagination.

My best guess would be your mind started to ignore stimuli from your body and then because you felt no pressure anywhere on your body. Since the only other time your body would feel like that is when falling, all of a sudden your defense mechanisms to protect against falling kicked in and... Though I could be wrong.
