When destiny islands was being taken by the heartless, sora and his wouldn't sword couldn't damage the heartless and kh 2 roxas couldn't damage the nobodies without the keyblade? So how come Goofy.Donald and everyone else can damage the heartless and nobodies? I thought you need a keyblade to do so.I guess I can understand Donald since he uses magic but what about everyone else.I remember beast being able to damage nobodies and heartless and every other party member being able to damage heartless. What gives? Is there any explanation for this or is it they didn't think about this?

and in a cutscene in kh2 when squall defeats some tron heartless the hearts get released from them

Gameplay purposes I guess? That's a good question. It's kind of like in 358/2 days when even though only the keyblade can reap hearts for the job, if Axel or whoever your partner is kills an Emblem Heartless, it still counts.

I also forgot in days when roxas was able to hit them with a stick.

Nomura logic: Your answer to all things KH related. :P

I guess you just need any a strong weapon to defeat the heartless. Anything but a wooden stick or bat.

Perhaps they didn't have the special fighting skills or something. But most likely there's no good story reason for it and it's just convenient in terms of the gameplay.

Well, when non-Keybalde wielders defeats a Heartless the heart will just float away for a time until it eventually becomes a new Heartless. While when an actual Keyblade wielder eliminates a Heartless, then it will go to Kingdom Hearts or return to it's original body if the Nobody has already been defeated.

Also, you get a ton of hearts when defeating such Heartless' like Darkside, and he's Pureblood Heartless; they don't have hearts. Only Emblem Heartless' has hearts.

@JTD95 Isn't it funny how they are called heartless if they have hearts floating out of them when they die?

Was it ever said the only a keyblade could damage heartless?

But it shown so through certain points in the game so its kinda stupid how sora and roxas can't damage them without a keyblade.I just remembered in kh 1 when riku took back the keyblade from you,you had the wooden sword and that could damage them...hmm.....now it seems even more stupid.I wondered it they realized this.Anyway Its not like that big of a deal and its for gameplay anyway but it'd be nice if we got an explaination for this.

The wooden sword DOES do damage, but very very little. Anyone can KILL a heartless, but only a Keyblade can release the hearts... although there have been some parts where they were released without a keyblade (continuity error). Also, that struggle sword Roxas was using was a DATA sword, and the Nobody was real. The Keyblade, however, was not exactly data, but was partially real.

Even so roxas is able to get hit during the struggle tournament and thats data so.....

That's because Roxas perceived it to be real in his HEART, which he had by the time.

If I remember correctly, Days revealed that any weapon can destroy Heartless, but you need a Keyblade to release the heart. Otherwise, the stolen heart is still available to create another Heartless. So basically... regular weapons defeat them on a temporary basis, whilst Keyblades defeat the Heartless for good.

Other weapons can damage Heartless, it's not only the Keyblade. It's true, Sora and Roxas couldn't damage enemies when they were using toy weapons, but that's merely a way to show how weak they are to our foes, it's doesn't even do damage.

If you look closely, even Sora could damage Heartless in Hollow bastion when he had no Keyblade with him, but it was a very low one. At the beginning of the games, the impression they have to give is that they're not common foes, so ordinary weapon don't do anything, and they show this by making our attacks don't even hit our targets. Advancing through the game, it's given a minimal damage so you won't be completely hopeless.

Other weapons obviously have effect, but you can't expect much from sticks, toy swords or those struggle bats to beat Hearless or Nobodies. Metal shields, magic and decent swords do the job as well, as we see in all Kh games. Our allies can all help defeating them.
